Moving Services in Chicago

We don't serve Chicago from a suburb — we live here. Windy City Movers has run out of 5222 N Elston Ave in Jefferson Park since 1982, and in four decades we've carried this city up and down every kind of building it has: 40th-floor condos in the Loop, garden units in Logan Square, vintage three-flats in Pilsen, and bungalows out in Beverly. Chicago moving isn't one job — it's a hundred different ones depending on your block, your building, and your alley, and that's exactly the experience we bring to the curb.

Moving Services in Chicago — Neighborhood by Neighborhood

Every Chicago neighborhood moves a little differently, and four decades in the city has taught us the difference. The North Side lakefront — Edgewater, Uptown, Lakeview, Lincoln Park — is dense with vintage walk-ups and high-rises near the Chicago Park District beaches and paths, where stairs, narrow doorways, and elevator reservations drive the plan. The Northwest and Southwest bungalow belts move like suburbs inside the city, with real driveways and gangways. River North and the West Loop are high-rise and loading-dock territory, while Wicker Park, Bucktown, and Logan Square mix two-flats with new construction on tight one-way streets.

Wherever you are on the map, the crew that shows up has done your kind of move before — and we plan it around your block, not a generic checklist.

High-Rise & Downtown Chicago Moves

Downtown, Streeterville, River North, and the South Loop run on building rules, and we work inside them. That means reserving the freight elevator, filing the certificate of insurance your management company requires, and booking the loading-dock window before move day — not discovering the requirements when the truck arrives. We've moved into and out of most of the major residential towers in the city, and that familiarity keeps a high-rise move from turning into an all-day wait for an elevator key.

Chicago Move Logistics — Parking Permits, Alleys & Access

City moves live and die on curb access. Many Chicago blocks require a temporary no-parking permit to hold space for a 26-foot truck, and we'll flag when your address needs one and how to arrange it. On the side streets and in the bungalow neighborhoods, the alley is often the real entrance — we plan dock-and-alley access so your crew isn't carrying a couch an extra hundred feet. We also watch the city's event and festival calendar, because a street closed for a summer fest can change where the truck has to sit.

Vintage Walk-Ups, Two-Flats & Single-Family Homes

Chicago's classic housing stock is part of its charm and part of its challenge. Third-floor walk-ups with tight stair turns, vintage two-flats with narrow vestibules, and graystones with grand-but-fragile staircases all need movers who protect both your furniture and the building. We pad doorways and banisters, disassemble what won't make the turn, and treat century-old woodwork like it still has to pass inspection when we leave.

How Much Do Movers Cost in Chicago?

Local moves start as low as $407 for studios and 1-bedrooms, $540 for 2-bedrooms, $675 for 3-bedrooms, and $810 for homes with 4+ bedrooms. Your exact quote reflects the real shape of your move — building access, stairs versus elevator, distance, and any packing — with no deposit to book and no seasonal price changes.

Moving Out of Chicago — or Across the Country

Plenty of our Chicago moves don't end in Chicago. We run the suburbs daily — out to the North Shore, the DuPage and Cook County suburbs, and the collar counties — and when a move leaves Illinois entirely, our long-distance team takes it from your city doorstep to any state. Same crew standards, one point of contact, start to finish.
