A piano is mostly wood, and wood never stops responding to the air around it. The soundboard, that big thin diaphragm that gives a piano its voice, swells in humid air and shrinks in dry air, and Chicago serves both extremes generously: furnace-dry winters, thick August humidity, sometimes a forty-degree swing inside a single week. In a living room, that's why pianos drift out of tune with the seasons. In the wrong storage unit, it's how a piano quietly dies. A standard self-storage locker that bakes in July and freezes in January can crack a soundboard, loosen tuning pins, and split glue joints in a single bad season, and none of it is repairable for less than the piano is worth.

Our piano crews prepare the instrument the way they would for any move: an upright padded fully and strapped to a piano board, a grand disassembled (legs, pedals, music stand off) and cradled on its side on a skid. Blanket-wrapped, it travels to the facility, where it's placed, not stacked against, not buried behind, in a spot where nothing leans on it and nothing gets set on top of it. The facility is monitored around the clock, and the piano sits out its stay in stable air until you call for it.

Coming out, the same crew discipline runs in reverse, through your new home's doorway with the house protected on the way in. One company is accountable for the whole chain: the move in, the months in the middle, the move out. No hand-off to a storage company that's never carried a piano.
