Piano disposal and removal crew at work in the Chicago area

Here's a hard truth about old pianos: most of them have nowhere left to go. The upright in the front room was a serious investment when it was new, back when every respectable parlor had one, but the market moved on decades ago. The free listings sit unanswered. The kids don't want it. The church already has two. And so it stands there, five hundred pounds of wood and cast iron, occupying the exact wall the new sofa needs. When a piano reaches that point, what you need isn't a buyer. It's a crew that can get it out of the house without wrecking anything on the way, and that's precisely what this service is.

Why you can't just drag it out

A piano is the single hardest thing in a house to get rid of. You can't set it out with the trash. You can't muscle it down a staircase with two friends and hope, because inside that wooden cabinet is a cast-iron plate holding tons of string tension, and the whole instrument is far heavier and more awkward than it looks. Every year people hurt their backs, crack their stair treads, and gouge their hallways trying, and the piano usually wins.

Removing one safely is the same discipline as moving one, which is why our piano crews handle it. The piano gets padded, the home gets protected the way it would on any of our moves (floor runners down, door frames and railings padded), and the instrument comes down the stairs and out the door under control, on a piano board, with enough hands on it. The only difference from a piano move is the destination.

Removed with care, disposed of responsibly

We haul the piano away and dispose of it responsibly, and the house it leaves looks exactly the way it did before we arrived, minus one piano. That last part is the point of hiring piano people for the job: the instrument may be at the end of its road, but your floors, walls, and staircase aren't.

A word of honesty before you book, because we'd rather talk you out of a mistake than take your money: if your piano still plays well and means something to your family, ask us about moving it instead. Disposal is for the instrument that's genuinely done, the one with the cracked soundboard, the dead keys, the decades of neglect that cost more to undo than the piano is worth. We're happy to give you a straight read on which one you have.

What it costs

The fee depends on the piano and the exit: an upright on the ground floor is a smaller job than a full-size upright at the top of a Chicago three-flat. Like everything we do, the quote is free, non-binding, and given before we touch anything, with no surprises when the truck is loaded.

This service lives in two of our worlds at once: it's part of everything-piano on our Piano Moving side, and part of clearing-things-out on our Junk Removal side. Either road leads to the same careful crew.

Say goodbye the easy way

Tell us what kind of piano it is, where it sits, and what the stairs look like, and we'll quote the removal straight. Call (773) 275-4100, email info@wcmoving.com, or start with a free quote. The piano had a good run. We'll take it from here.

I had an excellent move out experience with Windy City movers. I had a two bedroom apartment that also had a piano, and I lived on the top third floor without an elevator.
