Chicago to Asheville is one of those routes we've come to know. Plenty of Midwesterners have traded the flat grid of the city for the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, and the trip between the two runs about six hundred miles, down through Indiana and Kentucky, across Tennessee, and up into the hills for the last stretch. The protection is front-loaded

Everything that keeps a household safe over six hundred miles happens before the truck leaves Chicago. Shac and his crew wrapped the furniture piece by piece in moving blankets and shrink wrap, covering the surfaces, keeping drawers and doors closed, and padding the corners that take the knocks. Floors and doorways got protected at the house, the same as on any of our moves. Then the load went into the truck in tight, interlocked layers, strapped to the rails, packed so nothing had room to shift.

That last part is the quiet difference between a local move and an interstate one. On a short hop across the city, a loose spot in the load might never matter. Over ten hours of interstate, every gap gets found, every unsecured piece works itself around, and the miles do slow damage you don't see until the doors open. So the standard is simple: the load has to be built as if the road will test it, because it will.

The delivery end

At the Asheville end, the work ran in reverse. Everything came off, went in, and got unwrapped, and the household arrived the way it left. No missing pieces, no surprises, which is the entire measure of success for a move like this. Raymond's family could start their new chapter in the mountains with their things intact and the move already behind them.
