Chicago Moving Crews: What a Good Lead Does All Day

Notice the shape of Chad Ziolkowski's thank-you: Brandon and his team. Not just "the movers." That's the shape of every good crew, one person visibly running the day, and it's worth explaining what that person actually does, because from the outside a crew lead mostly looks like another mover carrying boxes.

He is that. He's also the one who walked the home first and set the plan: what gets wrapped, what comes apart, what loads first, where the truck sits. During the day he's assigning lanes, one person wrapping, one building the load, everyone carrying, so nobody stands idle and nothing gets done twice. He's the one checking the truck as it fills, because a load is only as safe as the person who says "strap that before we stack it." When all of that works, the customer sees almost none of it. What Chad saw was a move that "went smoothly," which is the crew lead's whole job description compressed into three words. Smooth isn't the absence of problems; every move has its snags, the tight turn, the piece that won't fit the way it should, the box nobody labeled. Smooth is those snags getting caught and solved by someone whose job is to be watching for them, before they ever become your problem. A crew without a real lead handles the same snags by committee, at the customer's expense, on the customer's clock.

The lead also owns the day's two bookends, which customers remember most. At the start, he walks the home with you before anyone lifts anything: what's fragile, what's staying, what the building requires, so the plan is yours, not assumed. At the end, he runs the final walkthrough, checking rooms with you, confirming the furniture sits where you want it, making sure nothing is left on the truck and nothing of the crew's is left in your home. A move that starts and ends with the same person looking you in the eye is a move with an owner.

That's also why we name our leads and build crews around them.
