I have used Windy City Movers for my last three moves in Chicago. Both the moving crew and the in-office staff are great! They wrapped all my items, moved them carefully, and were attentive.
Piano Moving
Grandfather Clock & Organ Moving in Chicago

Tall-case clocks and organs moved the right way: pendulum and weights out first, every part padded, nothing improvised. Chicago crews, since 1982.
Grandfather Clock & Organ Moving is one of our Piano Moving services. See the full category

There's a reason grandfather clocks and organs live in the piano side of our business: they're the other heirlooms in the house that are machines as much as furniture. A tall-case clock is a two-hundred-year-old idea in a slim wooden cabinet, driven by hanging weights and a swinging pendulum that absolutely cannot travel the way they stand. An organ is a piano's heavier, stranger cousin. Both get inherited, both anchor a room for a generation, and both punish anyone who moves them like a bookshelf.
The clock: disassemble first, always
The cardinal rule of grandfather clock moving is that the clock comes apart before it moves an inch. The pendulum comes off its suspension and travels wrapped on its own. The weights come out, each one noted for its position, because on many clocks they are not interchangeable and going back in the wrong order matters. Chains or cables get secured so they can't tangle or slap against the movement. Only then does the case itself get wrapped, and even that has nuance: the hood with its glass and dial is the fragile crown of the piece, and the slender case is top-heavy in a way that surprises people.
Skip those steps and the failure is quiet: a pendulum left hanging batters its suspension spring on the first staircase, weights swing into the movement, and the clock arrives looking fine and keeping time badly. Done right, the clock travels padded and upright-secured, gets reassembled at the new home, and ticks on like nothing happened. We treat the case itself with the same touch as our antique furniture work, because that's usually exactly what it is.
The organ: respect the weight
Organs run a huge range, from compact spinet organs to console organs to the pump organs that came out of churches and parlors a century ago, and the constant across all of them is deceptive weight in an awkward cabinet. Keyboards, stops, and pedals want padding; the cabinet wants blankets and shrink wrap; and the whole instrument wants a crew that has carried this kind of mass through Chicago doorways and down Chicago staircases before. That's us, weekly, with pianos, and the craft transfers directly.
One crew for the whole heirloom shelf
These moves rarely travel alone. The clock goes where the household goes, the organ rides along with the piano, and the practical advantage of our crews is that one team handles all of it inside the same move, with the same protection running through the house: runners on the floors, padded door frames, and a truck loaded so the delicate cabinets ride braced and untouched. If the destination isn't ready, our climate-controlled storage holds instruments in managed temperature and humidity, which suits a clock's old wood as well as it suits a soundboard.
This service is one branch of everything we do for instruments and heirlooms; the full lineup lives on our Piano Moving page.
What it costs
Like all our specialty work, the quote depends on the piece and the access: a spinet organ on a ground floor is a different job than a tall clock coming down a vintage staircase. Estimates are free and non-binding, given before the day, with no surprises after it.
