Long-distance piano moving crew at work in the Chicago area

Moving a piano across town is a craft. Moving one across state lines is that same craft, plus hours of highway, and the highway is where an unprepared piano loses. Vibration works on loose parts mile after mile. A load that isn't braced shifts in the first hard stop. So when a piano is leaving Chicagoland, for a new home downstate, a family member in another state, or a cross-country move, the job has two halves: handling it right at each end, and securing it so the miles in between never touch it.

The ends of the trip

At the origin, a long-distance piano move starts exactly like a local one, because the physics don't care about the destination. An upright gets padded head to toe and strapped to a piano board. A grand comes apart first, legs, pedals, and music stand off, then travels padded on its side on a skid. The house gets our standard protection on the way out (runners, padded frames), and at the far end the same care runs in reverse, through a doorway our crew has never seen but has planned for, because we ask about both ends before the truck rolls.

The miles in between

Inside the truck, the piano rides braced and strapped to the rails so it cannot walk, lean, or shift, and it's positioned in the load so nothing can settle against it. That placement matters more on a long haul than anywhere else: on a two-hour drive a soft spot in the load is a risk, and on a ten-hour drive it's a certainty. Our crews build the load around the piano rather than fitting the piano into the load.

Distance also means weather. A piano leaving a Chicago winter for a southern summer passes through real swings of temperature and humidity along the way, so we plan the trip to keep exposure short: prepared and wrapped indoors, loaded promptly, unloaded promptly, never left sitting in the truck longer than the drive itself requires. And if your timing has a gap, the new home isn't ready for the piano yet, our climate-controlled piano storage holds it in managed temperature and humidity until it is.

Priced by the trip, told upfront

Long-distance work is priced by size and distance, the same way all our long-distance moving runs, and a piano is quoted as what it is: its type, its access at both ends, and the miles. The estimate is free and non-binding, and it's the real number, no surge, no fees discovered en route. If the piano is traveling as part of a full household move, we fold it into the same trip and the same quote, one crew accountable for everything on the truck.

One suggestion from experience: schedule a tuning for a few weeks after arrival. Even a perfectly moved piano settles into a new home's air, and every piano technician will tell you to let it acclimate before the first post-move tuning. That's not damage; that's wood being wood.

This page is one branch of everything we do for pianos. The full picture, moving, storage, disposal, hoisting, lives on our Piano Moving page.

Send it well

Tell us the piano, both addresses, and the timeline, and we'll quote the trip straight. Call (773) 275-4100, email info@wcmoving.com, or start with a free quote. However far it's going, it should arrive as the same piano that left.

I had an excellent move out experience with Windy City movers. I had a two bedroom apartment that also had a piano, and I lived on the top third floor without an elevator.
