Can You Pick Up Furniture From the Alley or Curb?

Can You Pick Up Furniture From the Alley or Curb?

Last updated: October 2026

Yes. Tell us the address, the item, and when it'll be out.

Sometimes the hard part is already done. You and a friend got the old couch down the stairs. The landlord dragged the leftover mattress to the alley. The dresser has been sitting by the garage since Sunday. Now it just needs to disappear. That's an easy pickup. Quick, too.

What to tell us

The address. Including whether it's in the alley, at the curb, or by the garage.

The item. What it is, so we know what's coming.

When it'll be out. So we can time the pickup.

That's it. The crew shows up, loads it, and it's gone.

Why timing matters

In Chicago, furniture left outside doesn't stay in great shape for long, and a couch that looked perfectly donatable on Sunday afternoon can look very different after one overnight thunderstorm and a couple of days of people poking through it on their way down the alley. Rain soaks upholstery. Snow piles up on it. Alley pickers sometimes take pieces apart for parts and leave a mess behind. A wet, picked-over couch is harder to deal with than a dry one. The closer the pickup is to when you put the furniture out, the better.

If you haven't moved it outside yet, you might not need to. We remove furniture from inside your home, so you don't need to move anything outside yourself. Read do I need to move the furniture outside.

What we pick up

Sofas and sectionals. Including sleeper sofas.

Mattresses and box springs. Read can you take mattresses, box springs, and sofa beds.

Dressers, tables, and chairs. Any household furniture.

Appliances. Fridges and freezers just need to be emptied and drained.

Boxes and odds and ends. Whatever ended up in the pile.

What we don't take is hazardous materials and construction or demolition debris. Read what won't junk removal take.

For landlords and property managers

Alley pickups often follow a tenant move-out. If the unit still has more inside, we can clear that out too. Read do you handle apartment or landlord junk removal between tenants.

How it's priced

Junk removal is priced per item, quoted up front so there are no surprises once the truck is loaded. The price is the same whether the item is inside or out by the curb. Read how is junk removal priced.

Where it goes

Usable items go to local donation centers, and the rest goes to the junk yard. A dry, clean piece has a much better chance of being donated than one that's been rained on. Simple as that. That's one more reason to schedule the pickup close to when it goes out.

How fast we can come

Two weeks' notice is ideal, but we also do same-day junk removal. Read how fast can you schedule a junk pickup.

Curb and alley pickups are part of our furniture removal service, under our junk removal services alongside moving.

Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and tell us when it'll be out.

I had an excellent move out experience with Windy City movers. I had a two bedroom apartment that also had a piano, and I lived on the top third floor without an elevator.
