What's the Heaviest Furniture You Can Move?

We've moved pieces like a tall, thin concrete sculpture weighing almost 800 lbs, custom-crated for the trip. When a piece won't fit through a door or up a staircase, we add our hoisting service.

People usually ask this question because they have one particular piece in mind. The marble-top buffet. The solid oak armoire. The sectional that took six people to carry in. So rather than a single number, here's how we think about the big ones.

Weight is only part of it

A heavy piece on the ground floor with a wide door is a very different job from the same piece on the third floor of a walk-up. Weight matters, but so does the shape, the balance, and the path. A tall, thin piece is harder to control than a squat one. A piece with a fragile top needs more care than a solid block.

That concrete sculpture is a good example. Heavy and awkward. It was tall, thin, and almost 800 lbs. We built a custom crate for it so it could travel safely. Read can you move sculpture and do you build custom crates for art and fragile items.

Other heavy things we move

When it won't fit

Size can be a bigger problem than weight. If a piece comes apart, we take it apart. Assembly and disassembly are always included in our hourly rate. What we need to know

The piece. What it is, what it's made of, and roughly how much it weighs.

The size. Height, width, and depth.

The path. Floors, stairs, doorways, and turns at both homes.

Photos. Of the piece and of the path.

With that, we plan the crew, the equipment, and the approach before anyone arrives. On walk-ups, we bring lift straps, shoulder dollies, and three or more movers.

Protecting the piece and your home

Moving blankets pad your furniture for free on every move. Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected too. For valuable pieces, you can buy full coverage insurance through us or through your own insurer, on top of our standard coverage.

Pricing

Heavy furniture moves are hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. If a piece needs a custom crate or hoisting, we plan it into the estimate up front.
