Can You Handle Northwestern Move-In Season?
Can You Handle Northwestern Move-In Season?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes, but book early. Late August through mid-September is one of the most concentrated moving windows in the Chicago area.
When the fall term starts, Evanston fills up fast. Students move into apartments near campus. Families drive in from across the country with cars full of dorm supplies. Leases turn over all at once. Streets near campus get crowded, buildings book their elevators solid, and moving trucks are everywhere. If you're moving during those weeks, planning ahead makes all the difference. It really does.
Book early
Dates in late August and early September go fast, and the families who wait until the week before move-in often find that the only times left are early weekday mornings or late afternoons that don't line up with their flight into O'Hare or the lease start date. The sooner you book, the better your date and time options. If you can move a little earlier or a little later than the peak, you'll have more choices. Read when should college students book movers.
Reserve the curb
Evanston's moving vehicle permit reserves curb space and needs to be requested at least 10 business days ahead. During move-in season, request it early. Read do I need a moving truck permit in Evanston.
Check the building
Apartment buildings near campus often have elevator reservations, move hours, and COI requirements. Reserve the elevator as early as you can, and ask for a wider window. We send COIs for free, usually the same day your building sends its requirements. Read when will I receive the COI.
Walk-ups
Many student apartments in Evanston are in vintage walk-ups. Evanston's courtyard buildings are classic walk-up territory. Read do you move vintage walk-up apartments in Evanston.
Student moves
Student moves are usually small. A bed and a desk. A dresser and some boxes. They're hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Read how much does a student move cost.
Sharing a move
Roommates can share a move, with as many stops as you need. Easy. Read can two neighbors or roommates share a mini move.
Summer storage
If you're leaving Evanston for the summer, your things can wait in our storage until fall. We pick them up, keep them, and deliver them to your new place when you're ready. Read can college students store their stuff over the summer.
Any college
We move students at any college, not just Northwestern. Read do you move students at any college.
Families moving in from out of state
If you're coming from another state, the same truck and crew handle the move from pickup to delivery. Read moving into Chicago from another state.
Pricing
Our pricing doesn't change with the season. A move during Northwestern move-in costs the same per hour as one in February. The only thing that changes is how fast the calendar fills.
Northwestern season is covered on our Evanston movers page and our college moving service, part of our moving services.
