Can Two Neighbors or Roommates Share a Mini Move?
Can Two Neighbors or Roommates Share a Mini Move?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. It's pretty common, actually.
Two roommates are moving out of the same apartment to two different places. Two neighbors in the same building are both moving on the first of the month. A friend has a couch to drop off on the way. Instead of booking two separate moves, they share one truck and one crew and split the cost.
There's no limit on the stops. You can have as many as you want, whether it's two roommates heading to two neighborhoods or a whole group of friends moving out of the same building on the same weekend and dropping things at four different addresses. Plan the route, and we'll drive it.
How a shared move works
The crew loads everyone's things at the starting point, or at each pickup if there's more than one. Then the truck makes its stops. Your boxes go to your new place. Your roommate's go to theirs.
It's the same thing we do on multi-stop moves all the time. Read about a multi-stop move across the western suburbs to see how a route like that comes together.
Why it saves money
Mini moves are hourly, and every job has a 2-hour minimum. If two people each book a separate small move, each one pays for the minimum and for travel. In the Chicago area, moving companies charge at least one hour for travel. A shared move pays for one crew's time and one trip out, and two people split it.
The more stops there are, the more time the move takes. But one longer move is usually a better deal than two short ones.
How to plan a shared move
A shared move goes smoothly when everyone is on the same page before the truck shows up.
Mark whose stuff is whose. Colored tape or labels with names work well. The crew shouldn't have to guess which lamp belongs to which roommate.
Group it by stop. Keep each person's boxes and furniture together, so they go on and off the truck as a set.
List every address. Every pickup and every drop-off, in order.
Be there, or have someone there. Each stop needs someone to open the door and point to where things go.
Agree on the split ahead of time. How you divide the cost is between you and your roommate. Sorting that out before moving day keeps the day friendly.
Tell us about every stop
When you call for an estimate, tell us about every pickup, every drop-off, and what's going to each one. Tell us about stairs and elevators at each address too. That's how the estimate matches the real day.
Moving just a piece or two?
