Do You Handle Moves Into Chicago From Other States?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Long-distance moves go both ways, and moving into Chicago is one of them.
There's an advantage to hiring a Chicago mover for a move into Chicago. The hardest part of your move may not be the highway. It may be the last block. Parking, building rules, and the third-floor walk-up at the end of the trip are what a lot of movers from out of town aren't ready for. We deal with them every day.
Same truck, same crew, all the way
With Windy City Movers, the same truck and crew handle your move from pickup to delivery. Your belongings are never transferred to another company along the way. We're licensed for interstate moves under MC 1694629 and US DOT 4338139, and there's no set list of places we pick up from. It depends on where you're moving from.
Getting an estimate from another state
You probably can't walk us through your home in person from three states away. That's fine. We can do your estimate online by video or over the phone. Show us the rooms, point out the big pieces, and tell us about the building you're moving into. The more we see, the closer the estimate.
What's waiting at the Chicago end
Here's what new arrivals tend to learn the hard way.
Parking permits. Many Chicago blocks need a temporary no-parking permit to hold curb space for the truck. We'll tell you if your new address needs one, and how to arrange it ahead of time.
Building rules. High-rises usually want a certificate of insurance before any crew walks in, and many set the days and hours you can move. We send COIs for free, usually the same day the building sends its requirements. If your building limits move days, read what to do when your building only allows moves on certain days.
Walk-ups. A lot of Chicago apartments sit up a few flights of narrow stairs. Our crews carry with lift straps and shoulder dollies, and we usually send three or more movers to those jobs. Our post on moving into or out of a third-floor walk-up explains how it works.
Winter. From December 1 to April 1, Chicago bans overnight parking from 3 to 7 a.m. on 107 miles of main streets, whether it's snowed or not. If your truck arrives late in the day and unloads the next morning, that's worth knowing. (Source: WTTW)
