When Should College Students Book Movers?
When Should College Students Book Movers?
Last updated: October 2026
At least two weeks out. Earlier if you can.
The school year runs on the same calendar for everyone, and that means student moves pile up in the same few weeks. End of semester and September 1 lease turnovers fill fastest of the whole year. If your move lands in one of those windows, two weeks of notice is the minimum, not the goal.
The weeks that fill first
End of semester. Dorms close, leases end, and a whole campus tries to move out at once.
September 1. In Chicago, a lot of apartment leases turn over on the first of the month, and September 1 is a big one. Students moving into off-campus apartments are moving the same weekend as everyone else in the city.
Move-in season near campus. In Evanston, late August through mid-September is the most concentrated moving window in the Chicago area, thanks to Northwestern's move-in season.
If you know your dates, call as soon as you have them. Waiting until the last week of the semester means competing with half the city for the same handful of days, and the earlier you call, the more choice you'll have about the day and the time.
Booking early costs nothing
There's no deposit to book. If your dates change because a lease falls through or your housing assignment moves, rescheduling is free. Our post on rescheduling a move explains how. And our pricing stays the same all year, so the busy season doesn't come with a markup.
A simple timeline
Here's a rough plan. Adjust it to your school's calendar.
As soon as you know your dates. Call for an estimate and reserve the day.
Two weeks out. This is the minimum for the busy weeks.
The week before. Start packing. It always takes longer than it looks.
Move day. Have everything packed and stacked by the door, and someone there to let the crew in.
If you're storing over the summer
Summer storage needs two dates, one for pickup and one for delivery. Book both early, since both land in the busiest weeks of the year. We pick up, store your things, and deliver when your new place is ready. Read can college students store their stuff over the summer.
If you're short on time
Missed the two-week mark? Call anyway. Plans change fast in college, and we'd rather hear from you late than not at all. Same-day moves are often possible during business hours, depending on availability. Our post on booking movers for today explains how.
Moving after graduation
Graduating and leaving Chicago? Our long-distance moving service handles the Chicago-to-anywhere move. Book that one even earlier. Our post on how far in advance to book a long-distance move covers timing.
What it costs
Most student moves are small loads, priced on the actual work. See how much a student move costs.
