What If the Charity Rejects an Item?
What If the Charity Rejects an Item?
Last updated: October 2026
We tell you the common rejection rules upfront, like stained upholstery and broken pieces, so nothing makes a wasted trip. Anything that can't be donated goes to the junk yard instead.
It's a fair worry. Nobody likes wasted effort. You've set aside a few pieces you hoped someone else could use, and you don't want them turned away at the door. The best way to avoid that is to know the rules before anything leaves your house.
Common reasons items get rejected
Stained upholstery. Sofas and chairs with stains, pet damage, or strong odors.
Broken pieces. Furniture with broken legs, missing drawers, or cracked frames.
Tears and heavy wear. Ripped fabric, worn-through cushions, or peeling finishes.
Appliances that don't work. Donation centers generally want working appliances only.
Missing parts. A crib without its hardware, a table without its leaves.
Every donation center sets its own rules, and they can change from season to season depending on what they already have too much of and what their shoppers are looking for. That's normal. These are the common ones, and we'll go over them with you when you call.
What happens to rejected items
Items that can't be donated go to the junk yard. You don't have to deal with them twice. We handle donations and regular junk in the same visit, so whatever can't go to donation simply goes with the rest. Read can usable items be donated instead of dumped.
How to give your items the best chance
Clean them. A quick wipe-down or vacuum makes a big difference.
Check for damage. Look closely at cushions, legs, and drawers.
Keep the parts together. Hardware, shelves, and leaves should go with the piece.
Test appliances. Make sure they still work before the pickup.
Ask yourself one question. If you wouldn't want it in your own home, a donation center probably won't either.
Tell us about condition up front
When you book, tell us what's going and what shape it's in. If something sounds like it won't be accepted, we'll tell you right then. That way you know what to expect, and the items that are truly usable get where they can do some good. No surprises.
Appliances
Working appliances go to local donation centers when they can be reused, and the rest go to the junk yard. An appliance doesn't need to work for us to take it. Read what happens to appliances after you remove them.
Getting a receipt
We provide a receipt and an invoice for every donation pickup. Read do I get a receipt for my donation pickup.
Donating during a move
If you're moving, the same rules apply. Sort the donations from the junk before moving day, so the crew knows which pile is which.
Booking a pickup
You don't need to be moving to book one. Standalone pickups are welcome. Read can I book donation pickup without a move.
Donation rules are covered on our donation pickup service page, under our junk removal services alongside moving.
Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and tell us what you're donating.
