Can Usable Items Be Donated Instead of Dumped?
Can Usable Items Be Donated Instead of Dumped?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes, and we encourage it. Usable items go to local donation centers, and the rest goes to the junk yard.
A lot of what people want gone still has plenty of life in it. A solid dresser. A working washer. A dining set the kids outgrew. It would be a shame to throw that away when someone else could use it, especially when a family down the street might be furnishing their first apartment with exactly the kind of sturdy, unfashionable dresser you've been meaning to get rid of for years. So when something is still usable, it goes to a local donation center instead.
How it works
Tell us what's going. List the items when you call, and mention which ones are in good shape.
We pick everything up. From inside your home. You don't need to drag anything to the curb.
Usable items go to donation. We deliver them to local donation centers.
The rest goes to the junk yard. Anything that can't be donated.
Donations and regular junk can be handled in the same visit. You don't need two separate appointments.
What donation centers usually accept
Donation centers have rules about what they'll take. We'll tell you the common rejection rules upfront, like stained upholstery and broken pieces, so nothing makes a wasted trip.
In general, items that are clean, intact, and working have the best chance. Condition matters most. Furniture without stains or tears, appliances that still run, and household goods in good condition.
Why it's worth the extra thought
Donating takes a little more planning than tossing everything. You have to sort what's usable from what isn't. But the payoff is real. Good furniture stays in use, less ends up in the junk yard, and you get a receipt for what you gave.
Do I get a receipt?
Yes. We provide a receipt and an invoice for every donation pickup.
Donation pickup on its own
You don't need to be moving or clearing out junk to book a donation pickup. Standalone pickups are welcome. See our donation pickup service.
Donations during a move
Moving is the best time to let go of things you don't need. Donating them before the move means fewer things to pack, carry, and unpack. On senior moves, we can deliver items to family or to donation as part of the move. Read delivering items to family or donation during a senior move.
For tips on deciding what to keep, read our guide to decluttering before a move.
Appliances and pianos
Working appliances go to local donation centers when they can be reused, and the rest go to the junk yard. See our appliance removal service. Pianos follow the same rule. Read what happens to an old piano after you pick it up.
Estate cleanouts
Estate cleanouts work the same way. Usable items go to local donation centers, and the rest goes to the junk yard. See our estate cleanout service.
How it's priced
Junk removal is priced per item, quoted up front. Read how is junk removal priced.
Donation is covered on our junk removal page, part of our services alongside moving.
Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and tell us what's still in good shape.
