What Happens to an Old Piano After You Pick It Up?

Pianos that can still be used go to a local donation center. The rest go to the junk yard.
It's a question a lot of people ask, and usually for a good reason. An old piano carries memories. It might be the one you learned on, or the one your grandmother played every Sunday. Nobody wants to think of it being tossed out if someone else could still enjoy it.
When a piano can be donated
If the piano is still usable, it goes to a local donation center instead of the junk yard. If it still plays well, tell us when you call.
You'll get a receipt and an invoice for a donation pickup.
When a piano goes to the junk yard
Some pianos have reached the end of the road. A cracked soundboard. A broken frame. Water damage from a flooded basement. Keys that stopped working years ago. Those pianos go to the junk yard.
That's not a failure. Every instrument has a lifespan, and some of these pianos gave a family fifty or sixty years of music before the last note went out of them. Pianos don't last forever, and an instrument that can't be played or repaired is better off being cleared out than sitting in a garage for another decade.
How the removal works
Piano removal is handled with the same care as a piano move. Our piano crew handles basements, upper floors, and walk-ups, the same way it does for a piano move. Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected on the way out. Read can you pick up a piano for disposal from a basement, second floor, or walk-up.
If the piano can't take the stairs, our hoisting crew can bring it out through a window or over a balcony. Read can movers hoist furniture out of a building as well as in.
Replacing it with a new one?
If you're getting a new piano, we can remove the old one and deliver the new one on the same day. Read can you pick up the old piano and deliver a new one on the same day.
Clearing out more than the piano?
If the piano is part of a bigger cleanout, the rest can go too. Our junk removal service handles furniture and appliances. It also takes mattresses, electronics, and full-property contents. Usable items go to charity, and the rest goes to the junk yard. For furniture that deserves a second home, see our donation pickup service.
What it costs
Piano disposal depends on the piano and the access, so we give you an estimate before the pickup. Read what does piano disposal cost.
