Can You Remove a Piano From a Basement or Walk-Up?
Can You Remove a Piano From a Basement or Walk-Up?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Our piano crew handles basements, upper floors, and walk-ups, the same way it does for a piano move.
A piano that's headed for disposal is still a piano. It still weighs hundreds of pounds. It's still top-heavy, still awkward on stairs, and still capable of scraping walls and denting floors on its way out. The fact that it isn't coming back doesn't change how carefully it has to leave.
Basements
Plenty of old pianos end up in the basement. They got moved down there when the living room was redone, and nobody played them again. Getting one back up is often harder than getting it down was. Basement stairs in Chicago homes are often narrow and steep, and many turn at the bottom.
The crew brings the piano up one step at a time, with the stairs and walls protected along the way.
Second floors
Upstairs pianos come down the same careful way. The crew controls the piano on every step, and floors, door frames, and stairs get protected before anything moves.
Walk-ups
Walk-ups are the classic Chicago challenge. A piano at the top of a three-flat might be coming down two or three flights, with tight landings and sharp turns. It's the same job we do when we move a piano into or out of a walk-up for a customer who's keeping it.
When the stairs won't work
Sometimes a piano went in through a window, and it has to leave the same way. When the stairs won't work, our hoisting crew can bring it out through a window or over a balcony. Read can movers hoist furniture out of a building as well as in and what if my piano won't fit up the staircase.
What we need to know
The piano. Spinet, console, upright, or grand.
The floor. Basement, main floor, second floor, or higher.
The stairs. How many flights, how wide, and whether they turn.
The path out. Doorways, hallways, and the distance to the truck.
With that, we can give you an estimate before the pickup. Read what does piano disposal cost.
Before we arrive
Empty the piano and the bench. Sheet music, photos, and anything else stored inside.
Clear the path. Boxes, furniture, and anything on the stairs.
Tell your building. If you're in a building with management, let them know a piano is coming out.
Where it goes
Pianos that can still be used go to a local donation center. The rest go to the junk yard. Read what happens to an old piano after you pick it up.
Getting a new one?
If a new piano is coming in, we can remove the old one and deliver the new one on the same day. Read can you pick up the old piano and deliver a new one on the same day.
Basement and walk-up removals are part of our piano disposal service, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
