Can Movers Hoist Furniture Out of a Building?
Can Movers Hoist Furniture Out of a Building?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Getting a piece out of a building is a common reason to hoist.
Most people think of hoisting as a way to get a big new sofa into a walk-up, probably because that's the version they've seen on the street, with a crowd of neighbors watching a sectional rise past the second-floor windows. But the trip out can be just as hard. If a piece came in through the window, there's a good chance it has to leave the same way.
Why pieces get stuck inside
It came in through the window. A previous mover hoisted it in, and the stairs haven't gotten any wider since.
It was built in the room. Some pieces were assembled inside, and they're bigger now than any door they could have come through.
The building changed. A renovation added a wall, narrowed a hallway, or changed the stairs.
It's bigger than you remember. Anything that came in before sectional dimensions got bigger may need to leave the same way.
What we hoist out
Sofas and sectionals. Armoires. Pianos and safes. Large furniture of every kind. If it won't go down the stairs, the window or balcony is the next option.
Chicago's vintage three-flats, courtyard walk-ups, and greystones have stairwells sized for the furniture of their era. Tight landings and sharp turns don't care which direction a piece is going. Down is just as hard.
How it works
The process is the same in both directions. The piece gets padded and strapped. The crew rigs it and controls it the whole way from the window or balcony down to the ground. Then it goes on the truck. Read is hoisting safe for the furniture.
In and out on the same move
Some moves need a hoist at both ends. The sectional comes out of the old walk-up through the window, and it goes into the new one the same way. Tell us about both buildings when you call, so we can plan both hoists.
Before we hoist
We check whether the piece comes apart first. Assembly and disassembly are always included in our hourly rate, and sometimes that's all it takes. If a piece truly won't work, we tell you before move day, not after.
Getting rid of the piece instead?
If the piece isn't coming with you, it still has to get out of the building. Furniture that's done can go through our furniture removal and disposal service. Working pieces can go to local donation centers. Old pianos go through our piano disposal service.
What we need from you
Photos and measurements. Of the piece and of the window or balcony.
The floor. Which floor it's on.
The ground below. Whether there's a gangway, a fence, a tree, or a car in the way.
Pricing
Every hoist is different, so we estimate after we know the item, the height, and the access. Read how much does hoisting cost.
Hoisting out is part of our hoisting and crane service, one of our moving services.
