How Long Does Cross-Country Piano Delivery Take?
How Long Does Cross-Country Piano Delivery Take?
Last updated: October 2026
It works like our other long-distance moves. Nearby states are often next-day or two-day. Cross-country runs typically land within a one-to-two-week window that we agree on in advance.
The window is set before the piano leaves, not after. Always. You'll know when to expect it before the truck pulls away from your Chicago home.
What sets the timing
Distance. This is the biggest factor, by far. A move to Milwaukee or Indianapolis is a very different trip from a move to Denver or Seattle.
Whether it's traveling alone. A piano moving with a full home goes on the same schedule as the rest of your things.
Your dates. When you can hand it off and when you can receive it.
Same truck the whole way
The same truck and crew handle your piano from pickup to delivery, with no transfer to another company. Delivery timing doesn't depend on a hand-off somewhere in the middle of the country. Read how long does long-distance delivery take for more on how our long-distance timing works.
Why a window, not a date
For the longest trips, a delivery window is more realistic than a single date. Weather, traffic, and road conditions over a thousand miles can't be predicted to the hour. A window that's agreed on in advance gives you a clear expectation without a promise that the road might break.
Planning around the window
Book a tuner after delivery. Pianos usually need tuning after a long trip, once they've settled in.
Have the room ready. Clear the spot where the piano will go before the window opens.
Keep your phone handy. So the crew can reach you as delivery gets close.
Arrange access. If the new building has move rules or elevator reservations, sort those out ahead of time.
If you're not ready on time
Sometimes the new home isn't ready when the piano could arrive. In that case, the piano can wait in our storage, where both temperature and humidity are managed. When you're ready, we deliver it. Storage is billed monthly, or daily for short stays, with a minimum of one day. See our piano storage service.
How it travels
The wrapping, protection, and handling are the same as a local piano move. Read how is a long-distance piano move different from a local one.
And there's no set list of destinations. Read can you ship a piano cross-country or just to neighboring states.
A note on Chicago winters
If your piano is leaving Chicago in January, the trip out of a cold city is part of the story, and a piano that spent the morning in a heated living room and the afternoon on a truck heading south will need some time indoors before anyone sits down to play it. Be patient with it. Give it time.
Booking ahead
Long-distance moves need more lead time than local ones. Read how far in advance to book a long-distance move.
Delivery times are covered on our long-distance piano moving service page, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
