How Long Does Long-Distance Delivery Take?
How Long Does Long-Distance Delivery Take?
Last updated: October 2026
It depends on how far you're going.
For nearby states, delivery is often next-day or two-day. For cross-country moves, delivery typically lands within a one-to-two-week window that we agree on with you in advance.
That's the range. Here's what puts your move at one end or the other.
Distance is the biggest factor
A move from Chicago to Michigan or Wisconsin is a different trip than a move to North Carolina or New York. Shorter runs can often arrive the next day or the day after. Longer runs take longer, and they come with a delivery window rather than a single date.
The window is set before your move, not after. You'll know when to expect your things before the truck leaves Chicago.
Same truck, same crew, the whole way
Here's something that affects your delivery more than people realize. With Windy City Movers, the same truck and crew handle your move from pickup to delivery. Your belongings are never transferred to another company along the way.
A lot of long-distance moves don't work like that. Some companies sell the job and hand it off to a different carrier, and belongings can change trucks along the route. Our post on moving brokers vs. real movers explains why that matters. When the crew that loaded your home is the crew that unloads it, there's no hand-off where things get lost or delayed.
What happens if you're not ready yet
Delivery timing has two sides. One is when your things can arrive. The other is when you can take them.
If your new place isn't ready, like a closing that slipped or a lease that starts later, our storage service can hold everything until it is. We pick up, keep your things in our storage, and deliver when you're ready. Storage is billed monthly, or daily for short stays, so a gap of a few days doesn't turn into a month's bill.
How long-distance pricing works
Long-distance moves are priced on how much you're moving and how far it's going. Our post on how we determine the cost of a move explains it. Our pricing stays the same all year, so a summer move costs the same as a winter one.
Pianos too
Moving a piano across state lines? Long-distance piano moves work the same way, and the only real difference is the distance. Our long-distance piano moving service covers it.
Planning your arrival
A few things help on the receiving end. Keep a bag with what you'll need for the first few days, since your things may arrive after you do. Plan to be there, or have someone there, when the truck arrives. And if your new building needs a certificate of insurance or has move-in rules, tell us early so we can take care of it before delivery day.
Where to start
Delivery time is part of what we plan with you when we estimate your move. Our long-distance moving service is where this question lives with a short answer, alongside the rest of our moving services.
