How Is a Long-Distance Piano Move Different?
How Is a Long-Distance Piano Move Different?
Last updated: October 2026
Only the distance. The wrapping, protection, and handling are the same as a local piano move.
People expect a long-distance piano move to be a whole different process. More crates, more steps, more risk. But the piano doesn't know how far it's going. It needs the same care leaving a Chicago living room whether it's headed to Evanston or to Arizona, and the crew that wraps it, carries it down the front steps, and straps it onto the truck does the job the same way either time.
What stays the same
The wrapping. The piano gets padded and strapped the same way.
The equipment. Uprights travel strapped on a piano board. Grands come apart first. The legs and pedals come off with the music stand and lid, and the piano rides on its side on a skid board.
The handling. The crew controls the piano on the stairs and onto the truck exactly the way they would on a local move.
The coverage. Every move includes our standard coverage, which is based on weight, and you can buy full coverage insurance separately for a valuable instrument.
What changes
The drive. That's really it. Seriously. A local move might take an hour on the road. A long-distance move takes days. Read how long does cross-country piano delivery take.
Same truck, the whole way
This is the part that matters most on a long trip. The same truck and crew handle your piano from pickup to delivery. There's no transfer to another company along the way.
That's not true of every long-distance move. Some companies sell the job and hand it off to a different carrier, and a piano can change trucks along the route. Every hand-off is another chance for damage. Our post on moving brokers vs. real movers explains why that matters.
Where it can go
Wherever you need it to go. There's no set list of destinations. Read can you ship a piano cross-country or just to neighboring states.
Planning the trip
Book ahead. Long-distance moves need more lead time than local ones. Read how far in advance to book a long-distance move.
Tell us about both homes. Stairs, doors, and turns at each end.
Book a tuner at the new place. A piano that's traveled a long way will likely need tuning once it settles in.
Think about the weather. A Chicago winter and a southern summer are very different places for a piano. Let it adjust before the tuner comes.
Not ready to receive it?
If the new home isn't ready yet, the piano can wait in our storage, where both temperature and humidity are managed. See our piano storage service.
Moving the whole house too?
Most long-distance piano moves are part of a full move. Book the whole thing together. Our long-distance moving service covers the rest of your home.
Long-distance piano moves are part of our long-distance piano moving service, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and tell us where the piano is headed.
