How Far in Advance Should I Book a Long Distance Move?
How Far in Advance Should I Book a Long Distance Move?
Last updated: October 2026
Three to four weeks out is comfortable. If you're moving in summer, earlier is better.
That's the short answer. The longer one depends on what else is moving in your life at the same time, because a long-distance move rarely happens in a vacuum. There's a closing date, a lease, a new job with a start date, kids changing schools. The move has to fit around all of it.
Why lead time matters more for long distance
A local move takes a day. A long-distance move keeps a truck and crew busy for much longer. With Windy City Movers, the same truck and crew handle your move from pickup to delivery. Your belongings are never handed off to another company along the way.
It's a better way to move. It also means each long-distance move is a bigger block on our calendar, so booking ahead matters.
Summer fills first
May through September is peak season for moving in Chicago. Long-distance dates in summer go faster than the rest of the year. If your move lands in June, July, or August, start calling as soon as you have a date. Don't wait. When your closing date and your new job and the kids' school calendar all point to the same week in July, you're sharing that week with a lot of other families, and the earlier you call, the more choice you have.
Booking early costs nothing
There's no deposit to book. So if you know your date, reserve it. And if the date shifts later because the closing moves or the lease changes, rescheduling is free. Our post on rescheduling a move explains how that works.
Our pricing also stays the same all year. Booking early locks in your date, not a special rate, and booking late doesn't cost a premium either.
Plan the packing at the same time
If you're going to hire packing, book it when you book the move. Full packing is the most popular add-on for our long-distance moves, and it makes sense. Packing a whole home for a cross-country trip takes far longer than most people plan for. Our full packing service can pack every room before the truck is loaded.
If you're packing yourself, give yourself more time than you think. Start with the rooms you use least.
When the dates don't line up
Sometimes you have to be out of the old place before the new one is ready. That's common with long-distance moves, especially when a closing date moves. Our storage service bridges the gap. We pick up your things, keep them in our storage, and deliver them when you're ready. Storage is billed monthly, or daily for short stays.
A simple timeline
As soon as you know the date. Call for an estimate and reserve the day.
