Can You Move a Piano Cross-Country?
Can You Move a Piano Cross-Country?
Last updated: October 2026
Wherever you need it to go. There's no set list of destinations. It depends on where you're moving.
Some people assume a Chicago mover will only take a piano as far as Wisconsin or Indiana. Others assume a piano can't safely travel more than a few hundred miles. Neither is true. Not even close. A piano that's wrapped, strapped, and handled properly can make the trip to the other side of the country.
Neighboring states
Moves to the states around Illinois are the most familiar long-distance trips out of Chicago. Think Wisconsin and Indiana. Michigan and Iowa too. Nearby states are often next-day or two-day deliveries.
Cross-country
Longer trips work the same way, just with more road. They come with a delivery window instead of a single date, because nobody can promise the exact hour a truck will roll into a driveway two thousand miles from Chicago. Cross-country runs typically land within a one-to-two-week delivery window that we agree on with you in advance. Read how long does cross-country piano delivery take.
The same care the whole way
A long-distance piano move is only different from a local one in distance. The wrapping, protection, and handling are the same. Uprights travel strapped on a piano board. Grands are partly taken apart and ride on their side on a skid board. Read how is a long-distance piano move different from a local one.
One truck, no hand-offs
The same truck and crew handle your piano from pickup to delivery, with no transfer to another company. That matters more on a long trip than a short one, because every transfer is another chance for something to go wrong. Read moving brokers vs. real movers.
What we need to plan it
The piano. Upright, baby grand, or grand.
Both addresses. Including floors, stairs, and anything tricky at either end.
Your timing. When it needs to leave and when you can receive it.
The rest of the move. Whether the piano is traveling alone or with your whole home.
Moving everything, or just the piano?
Most cross-country piano moves are part of a full home move. If so, book it all together. Our long-distance moving service handles the rest. If the piano is traveling on its own, that's fine too.
Coming into Chicago
It works in reverse too. If you're moving to Chicago from another state, read moving into Chicago from another state.
When you get there
Pianos usually need tuning after a long trip, once they've settled into their new surroundings. Book a local tuner at your new home for after the piano has had time to adjust.
If you can't take delivery right away, the piano can wait in our storage, where both temperature and humidity are managed. See our piano storage service.
Coverage
Every move includes our standard coverage, which is based on weight. For a valuable instrument, you can buy full coverage insurance separately.
Cross-country piano moves are part of our long-distance piano moving service, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
