How Far in Advance Should I Book My Move? A Chicago Mover's Guide

Quick answer: for a local move around Chicago, two to four weeks is the sweet spot. For a long-distance move, or any move during the busy summer stretch, give yourself six to eight weeks. Book earlier than that if your heart is set on a specific day, because the popular dates go first.
Now the longer version, because the right lead time depends on a few things.
Local moves: two to four weeks
If you are moving within the city or the suburbs, two to four weeks of notice is usually enough to land your first-choice date. That window gives us time to understand your move, send the right size truck, and lock in a crew that is yours for the day.
One catch worth knowing: not every date is created equal. Weekends and the last few days of the month are the busiest, because that is when leases turn over and schedules line up. If you have your eye on a Saturday at the end of the month, lean toward the four-week side and book early. Those slots fill first, every single time.
Long-distance moves: six to eight weeks
If your move takes you downstate or across state lines, give it more runway. Six to eight weeks is ideal. A long-distance move has more moving parts: route planning, scheduling the drive, and prepping the right materials for days on the road. Booking early lets us line all of that up properly instead of rushing it, and it means your things leave and arrive on a schedule that actually works for you.
Summer is the busy season
We do not change our prices by season, but our calendar definitely fills up faster at certain times of year. The whole moving industry gets slammed between May and September, when families move in the warmer weather and try to settle in before school starts.
If you are moving in those months, treat the two-to-four-week guideline as a floor, not a target. Reaching out around six weeks ahead gives you breathing room and a real shot at the date you want, instead of settling for a random Tuesday.
Why booking early actually helps you
Getting on the calendar is only part of it. An early date also gives you time to go through your closets and decide what is really coming with you, which helps us give you a more accurate quote. If you are moving into a high-rise, it gives you the lead time to reserve the freight elevator with building management, which often has to happen weeks ahead. And if you are packing yourself, it gives you room to gather boxes and supplies without a last-minute scramble. If you would rather skip all of that, our full packing service handles it for you.
Need to move on short notice?
Life does not always run on a four-week plan. Job transfers, closings that move up, the occasional emergency, they all happen. We handle last-minute moves too, and we will always try to fit you in.
If you need to move in days rather than weeks, call us right away. The schedule may be tighter, but four decades of doing this in Chicago means we are good at being flexible when it counts.
The bottom line
Book two to four weeks out for a local move, six to eight for long-distance or a summer move. Earlier is always safer if you want a specific day. And if you are already inside that window, do not panic. Just call.
