When Does Street Sweeping Affect a Lincoln Square Move?
When Does Street Sweeping Affect a Lincoln Square Move?
Last updated: October 2026
Chicago sweeps streets from April through mid-November, on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Streets and Sanitation posts signs 48 hours ahead, so check your block's signs and the city's schedule before booking a weekday move.
Street sweeping is one of those things nobody thinks about until the morning of the move, when the signs are up, the truck is around the corner, and every spot near the front door is suddenly off-limits for most of the working day. If your block is scheduled for sweeping on your moving day, parking on that side of the street isn't allowed during the posted hours. That can include the spot where the moving truck was supposed to go.
How sweeping works
The season. April through mid-November.
The days. Weekdays.
The hours. Between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The signs. Streets and Sanitation posts temporary signs on the block 48 hours ahead of sweeping.
Vehicles left on the street during posted sweeping hours can be ticketed.
Why it matters on moving day
A truck that can't park near your building has to park farther away. That means a longer carry for every box and every piece of furniture. On an hourly move, a longer carry means a longer day, because every extra half block gets walked dozens of times between the first box and the last piece of furniture. And if the truck is already parked when the sweeping signs apply, it may have to move partway through the job.
How to plan around it
Check your block. Look for posted sweeping signs a few days before your move.
Check the city's schedule. The city publishes sweeping schedules by area.
Pick a non-sweeping day. If your street is swept on Tuesday, a Wednesday move avoids the problem.
Move on a weekend. Sweeping happens on weekdays.
Use the alley. If your building has alley access, the truck may not need the street at all.
Sweeping and parking permits
If your block needs temporary no-parking signs for the truck, sweeping can overlap with them. Read do I need a parking permit to move in Chicago. Some Lincoln Square side streets carry permit zones. Tell us your block and we'll sort the right approach when you book.
Festival weekends
Weekends avoid sweeping, but Lincoln Square has its own busy weekends. Read can you move on festival weekends near Lincoln Square.
After mid-November
Once sweeping season ends, winter brings different rules, like Chicago's overnight parking ban on certain main streets from December 1 to April 1. Read does the winter parking ban affect a Logan Square move, since the same citywide rule applies in Lincoln Square.
Other neighborhoods
Street sweeping applies across Chicago, not just Lincoln Square. If you're moving in Lake View, Logan Square, or anywhere else in the city, the same check is worth doing. Read when does the Lakeview moving season peak.
Pricing
Lincoln Square moves are hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Our pricing doesn't change with the season. Planning around sweeping just keeps the hours down. It's a small check. It pays off.
