Does the Winter Parking Ban Affect a Logan Square Move?
Does the Winter Parking Ban Affect a Logan Square Move?
Last updated: October 2026
It can. From December 1 to April 1, Chicago bans parking on 107 miles of main arterial streets from 3 to 7 a.m., snow or not. If your move starts early or a truck stays overnight, check whether your street is on the ban list.
Most Logan Square moves happen during the day, when the ban doesn't apply. But early starts and multi-day moves can run right into it, and a towed truck is the last thing anyone wants on moving day, especially at six in the morning with a crew standing on the sidewalk and a whole apartment waiting to be loaded.
How the ban works
The dates. December 1 through April 1.
The hours. 3 a.m. to 7 a.m.
The streets. About 107 miles of main arterial streets across the city.
Snow or not. The ban applies every night in that period, whether it snows or not.
Vehicles parked on a ban street during those hours can be towed and ticketed, with storage fees on top.
When it affects a move
Early starts. If the truck needs to be in place before 7 a.m. on a ban street.
Overnight trucks. If a move spans two days and the truck stays on the street.
Loading on a main street. If your building fronts a main arterial street.
How to check your street
It takes a minute.
Chicago posts signs on streets covered by the winter overnight ban. Look for them on your block. If your building is on a main street, check before you plan an early start. If you're on a side street, the winter overnight ban usually isn't the issue.
Side streets and permits
Many Logan Square side streets need parking permits for a move. Boulevard addresses often don't. Read do I need a parking permit to move in Chicago.
Two-flats and boulevards
Logan Square is known for two-flats and boulevard homes. Read do Logan Square two-flat moves need anything special and can you move a Logan Square boulevard home with antiques.
Winter moving in general
Shovel and salt. Walks, steps, and the path to the truck.
Lay down mats. Snow and slush come in on boots.
Protect electronics. Let them warm up before turning them on.
Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected on every move, at no charge. Read our winter moving tips.
Moving to the suburbs?
Suburbs have their own winter rules. Glenview bans overnight parking on all public streets from 2 to 6 a.m. between December 1 and March 31. Evanston has snow route and snow emergency rules. Read is there a winter overnight parking ban in Glenview and what happens if it snows on my Evanston moving day.
