Can You Move Sculpture?
Can You Move Sculpture?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes.
Sculpture is one of the trickiest things to move. It can be heavy and fragile at the same time. It's often top-heavy or oddly shaped, with no good place to grab. And unlike a dresser, there's no replacing it if something goes wrong.
So before anyone lifts, we look at three things. Every time. Skipping that step is how a heavy piece ends up leaning on its most fragile point halfway down a staircase, which is exactly the moment you don't want to discover where its balance really is.
Weight
A bronze figure, a stone bust, a concrete piece. Sculpture can weigh far more than it looks. The weight decides how many movers the job needs and what equipment comes with them.
Material
Stone chips. Metal dents and scratches. Plaster cracks. Concrete can be surprisingly brittle when it's thin. The material decides how the piece gets wrapped and what it can touch.
Balance points
Every sculpture has a center of gravity, and it's rarely in the middle. A tall piece with a small base wants to tip. A piece with an arm or a branch sticking out has a weak point. The crew works out where to support it so it travels without stress on the fragile parts.
Stone and metal work travels braced and padded, so it can't shift in the truck.
The 800 lb Chinese art piece
One job shows how this comes together. It was a piece of Chinese art made of concrete. Tall and thin, almost 800 lbs, with a shape that made it fragile. Too heavy to handle casually, too thin to handle roughly. We built a custom crate for it, and that crate is what got it there safely.
Custom crates are something we build ourselves. Read do you build custom crates for art and fragile items for more on when a piece needs one.
When it won't fit the stairs
Large sculpture sometimes can't take the stairs, especially in older Chicago buildings. When a piece won't fit through the door or up the staircase, our hoisting and crane service can bring it in through a window or over a balcony.
Working with your installer
If an art consultant, installer, or gallery is involved, we work with them. They place and install. We get the piece there safely. Read do you work with art consultants, installers, or gallery staff.
Coverage
Every move includes our standard coverage, which is based on weight. For a valuable sculpture, that won't match its worth. You can buy full coverage insurance through us or through your own insurer.
Before you call
Tell us what the piece is made of, roughly how big and heavy it is, and where it's going. Photos help a lot. Mention stairs, doorways, and elevators at both ends.
