Is There a Weight Limit for Moving a Safe
Is There a Weight Limit for Moving a Safe?
Last updated: October 2026
We routinely handle safes up to 1,500 lbs. Tell us the model and we'll confirm.
That covers most safes people keep at home. But weight is only half the question. A 600 lb safe on a ground floor and a 600 lb safe in a basement with a narrow, turning staircase are two very different jobs. So when you call about a safe, we ask about more than the number.
What we need to know
The make and model. If you have it, this tells us the weight and the dimensions in one go. It's usually on a label inside the door or in the paperwork that came with the safe.
The size. Height, width, and depth. A tall safe and a squat safe of the same weight move differently.
Where it is now. Which floor, how many stairs, how tight the turns are, and how far it is to the door.
Where it's going. The same questions at the other end.
With that, we can plan the crew and the approach before anyone shows up.
Why stairs matter as much as weight
Most of the effort in a safe move happens on the stairs. A heavy safe going down into a basement or up to a second floor has to be controlled one step at a time. Basement placements are the most requested safe move in Chicago homes, so we see a lot of them.
For a closer look at how a crew gets a heavy safe down a staircase, read safe moving in Chicago.
When the stairs won't work
Some safes are too big for the staircase, or the turns are too tight. When a piece won't go through the door or down the stairs, our hoisting and crane service is the option for bringing large items in or out through a window or balcony. We'll tell you up front if that's what your move needs.
Before moving day
The safe must be empty before we move it. That's not optional. Read does my safe need to be empty for why.
We move all kinds of safes, but we don't move guns. If it's a gun safe, the guns come out first and travel separately with you.
Floors and door frames get protected at both ends, the same as every move we do.
How it's priced
Safe moves are hourly like our other moves, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. The weight, the stairs, and the crew size all show up in the estimate, so you'll know before the day what it will take.
Moving it within the house?
Not every safe move leaves the property. If you're repositioning a safe from one room or floor to another, read do you move safes within the same house.
Weight limits are covered on our safe moving service page, part of our moving services.
