What If My Furniture Doesn't Fit Through the Door?
What If My Furniture Doesn't Fit Through the Door?

Then we find another way. If the piece comes apart, we take it apart. If it doesn't, we hoist it through a window or over a balcony with our hoisting service. And if it truly won't work, we tell you before move day, not after.
Every Chicago mover has met the sofa that won't make the turn. We have too. Older apartments and two-flats have narrow doors, tight stairwells, and landings that turn at a sharp angle. A sectional that fit fine in the showroom can be a puzzle in a vintage walk-up.
Option one: take it apart
A lot of furniture comes apart more than people think. Legs come off. Sectionals split into pieces. Bed frames, desks, dining tables, and wardrobes break down. Sometimes taking off the legs and the doors is enough to clear the frame by an inch.
Assembly and disassembly are always included in our hourly rate, at both ends of the move. Read do you disassemble and reassemble furniture, or see our furniture disassembly service.
Option two: hoist it
Some pieces don't come apart. A solid sleeper sofa. A one-piece armoire. A large mirror in a heavy frame. When the door and the stairs won't work, the window or the balcony often will. Our hoisting and crane service lifts large pieces in or out from the outside, skipping the stairs completely.
Option three: know before the day
The worst time to find out a piece won't fit is when the crew is standing in the hallway holding it. That's why we ask about the big pieces up front, and why we'd much rather hear about the oversized sectional or the antique wardrobe on the phone two weeks before the move than see it for the first time on moving day. If something truly won't work, we tell you before move day, so you can make a decision without the clock running.
How to help us plan
Measure the piece. Height, width, and depth, plus the diagonal depth if you can.
Measure the path. Every doorway, hallway, and stair turn between the room and the street, at both homes.
Send photos. Of the piece, the stairs, and the windows or balcony.
Mention it early. Tell us about the big pieces when you call, not on the morning of the move.
Moving the piece on its own
You don't need a whole move to use these options. If you only need one oversized piece moved, we do single-item moves too. Read can you move just one piece of furniture.
How big can it be?
We've moved some unusual pieces, including a tall, thin concrete sculpture weighing almost 800 lbs, custom-crated for the trip. Read what's the heaviest or largest piece of furniture you can move.
Pricing
Bulky furniture moves are hourly like our other moves, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. If a piece needs hoisting, we plan it into the estimate.
Pieces that won't fit are covered on our bulky furniture moving service page, one of our moving services.
