How Much Does a Small Move Cost in Chicago?
Last updated: October 2026
Less than a big one, but not by a fixed formula.
Every small move is different, so we price yours on what it actually takes. A studio on the ground floor with the truck at the door is a quick job. A studio on the fourth floor of a walk-up, with the closest parking a block away, takes longer. Same size. Different move.
Here's what shapes the number.
The minimum
Like every job we do, small moves have a 2-hour minimum. It applies to a single couch the same way it applies to a studio apartment. Our post on whether there's a minimum charge for moving explains how it works.
Most small moves wrap up in two to three hours door to door, so the minimum covers a lot of them.
What moves the number
How much you're moving. A few rooms takes longer than a few pieces. The load size matters.
Stairs. Walk-ups take more time than elevators. Stairs aren't a separate fee with us, but they show up on the clock.
Distance. In the Chicago area, moving companies charge at least one hour for travel. A move across the street and a move across the city aren't the same drive.
Crew size. More movers raise the hourly rate. For a small move, a smaller crew usually makes sense, and we'll tell you what we'd send.
What's already included
A small move doesn't come with a stack of add-ons. Moving blankets are always free during the move. Taking a bed frame apart and putting it back together is included in the hourly rate. Mattress bags are included too, and TV boxes are free to use on moving day.
How to keep it small
Be packed when we arrive. The clock runs shorter when boxes are taped and stacked by the door.
Clear the path. Hallways empty, doors propped, parking figured out.
Share the truck. If a neighbor or roommate is moving at the same time, splitting a move is pretty common, and you can have as many stops as you need. Our post on sharing a mini move explains how.
Answer these before you call
A good estimate starts with a few details. What floor are you on at each end, and is there an elevator? Where can a truck park, and is there a loading zone or alley? Which pieces are big, heavy, or fragile, and do any of them need to come apart to get through a door? With those answers in hand, we can tell you what the move will take, which crew makes sense, and roughly how long the clock will run before anyone carries a single box down the stairs.
What never changes
Our pricing stays the same all year. There's no deposit to book, and estimates are free. A small move in July costs what it costs in February.
Just one piece?
