How Much Do Movers Cost in Chicago? A Straight-Talk Pricing Guide

How Much Do Movers Cost in Chicago? A Straight-Talk Pricing Guide

Weather in the Windy City is famously unpredictable. Your moving bill shouldn't be. Whether you're going from a studio in River North to a bungalow in Logan Square or the other way around, the point of a good moving quote is that the number you're told is the number you pay. Here's how our pricing actually works, what shifts a bill, and where you can genuinely save money without cutting anything that matters.

What we don't do to your bill

Before the numbers, the practices we specifically avoid, because they're where a lot of moving-industry stress lives:

No seasonal surge. Some companies raise their rates in summer and drop them in winter. We don't. A Tuesday in February and a Saturday in July get the same rate.

No weekend or month-end premium. Same rate whether you move on the 1st, the 15th, or the last day of the month. Saturday isn't more expensive than Wednesday.

No hidden fees. Materials that show up on the day, tape, blankets, shrink wrap, wardrobe boxes to use on-site, come with the crew, not with an added line item. If we bring it and use it, it's not a surprise on the invoice.

No deposit. Booking is free. You pay when the work is done.

That's what "transparent pricing" actually means. Not a slogan; a policy.

Local move starting prices

Local moves are hourly, with a minimum by home size. Here are the published floors for the most common Chicago moves:

  • Studio / 1-bedroom — starts at $405
  • 2-bedroom — starts at $540
  • 3-bedroom — starts at $675
  • 4-bedroom and larger — starts at $810

Those are the floors, not caps. Most moves finish there or close to it; the ones that take longer, because of stairs, walk-ups, packing that isn't done, unusual pieces, take the extra hourly time and no more. The estimate spells out where your day is most likely to land, and the bill follows the actual hours.

For long-distance moves, out of Chicagoland to another state, pricing is by the size of the load and the distance of the trip, quoted free and non-binding, with no national brand's overhead riding along.

What actually moves the number

Since our rates don't vary by the calendar, what does move a bill up or down is real logistics. Four things do most of the work:

Stairs and walk-ups. Vintage Chicago three-flats and older walk-ups add real time to a move: every trip is longer, and heavy pieces need more hands. A first-floor apartment moves faster than a third-floor walk-up carrying the same furniture. This is usually the single biggest variable in a city move.

Elevators and buildings. In a high-rise, the freight elevator is the resource. Reserving it in advance at both ends, and having your building's certificate of insurance handled (we do that, free, usually same day), keeps the crew moving instead of waiting. Waiting is billable time nobody wants to pay for.

How much you've packed. A fully boxed home moves faster than a half-packed one, because the crew works on furniture while boxes still exist to be dealt with. If you'd like the crew to pack for you, our full packing service is priced separately and worth every minute for busy households.

Parking and access. A truck that parks right at the door costs nothing extra; a block where the truck has to sit fifty feet away adds carry time to every trip. In neighborhoods that need posted parking permits, we'll flag it before moving day, so nothing surprises anyone.

How to save real money on your move

Not by moving small things yourself in five car trips over three days. That's the classic false economy: you end up exhausted, you eat your own weekend, and the crew moves the big stuff either way. The genuine savings come from a few boring habits:

  • Be fully packed and labeled before the crew arrives. Boxes labeled by room let the crew load fast and unload right the first time.
  • Declutter early. Anything you're not keeping should be gone before moving day. Less to carry is less to pay for. If some of it is furniture with life left in it, our donation pickup or a cleanout can be handled in the same day.
  • Have parking as close as possible to your door, and, in a building, reserve the elevator ahead of time.
  • Book the morning slot. Moves that start early finish in daylight, especially valuable in winter, and don't run into the busy end of the day.
  • Give an honest estimate. The more accurately you describe your move at booking, the more accurate the quote is, and the fewer surprises anyone has on the day. Guessing low doesn't save money; it just misplaces it.

How to check a quote against ours

If you're comparing us against another moving company, and we hope you are, one thing makes the comparison fair: confirm both quotes cover the same day. Crew size, materials included, protection standard, travel time treatment, whether furniture assembly at the new place is part of the number. A cheap quote that leaves items out becomes an expensive move at the end. Our quote spells it out, so the number you compare is the number you'd pay.

Get an honest number for your move

The best way to know what your specific move will cost is to tell us about it. Our estimates are free and non-binding: describe the home, the buildings, the timing, and we'll give you a real number built on your actual day, not an average.

Call (773) 275-4100, email info@wcmoving.com, or start with a free quote. No seasonal surge, no weekend hike, no deposit, just honest work priced by the work.
