Can You Move Just One Piece of Furniture?
Can You Move Just One Piece of Furniture?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. All the time.
Couches, dressers, and appliances move on their own every week. You bought a sectional from a seller across town. You inherited a dresser from your aunt. Your new apartment came with no fridge. One piece is a real move, and it gets a real crew.
How a single-piece move works
It's simple. Tell us three things when you call.
Where it's coming from. Including the floor and whether there are stairs or an elevator.
Where it's going. Same details on that end.
What it is. The size, roughly how heavy it is, and anything fragile about it.
That's enough for us to plan the crew and give you an estimate. Like every job, a single-piece move has a 2-hour minimum.
Picking up from a store or a seller
A lot of single-piece moves start somewhere other than your home. A furniture store that doesn't deliver. A seller you found online. An estate sale on a Saturday morning. We handle those too. Give us the pickup address, the delivery address, the item, and the floor at each end.
When it's big
Some single pieces are bulky enough to be a project. Oversized sectionals, armoires, and heavy wardrobes often have to come apart to get through a door. Taking them apart and putting them back together is always included in the hourly rate. Our bulky furniture moving service covers big pieces like these.
And when a piece truly won't fit through the door or up the staircase, our hoisting and crane service can bring it in through a window or over a balcony instead. If it won't work at all, we'll tell you before move day, not after.
Specialty pieces have their own plan
Some single items need specialty equipment and a crew that does nothing else. A piano or a safe has its own service for that reason. So do large appliances. If you're moving one of those, start there.
Getting the piece ready
A few small things make a single-piece move go faster. Empty the drawers if it's a dresser, since a lighter piece is an easier carry and nothing slides around inside. Take anything valuable off it or out of it. And measure the doorways and stairs at the new place before moving day, because finding out that a couch is two inches too wide for the front door is a lot easier at home with a tape measure than on the stoop with a crew holding it.
Protected like any move
One piece gets the same care as a whole house. Moving blankets are free during the move, and they wrap every piece before it leaves the room. Floors and door frames get protected at both ends.
How fast it happens
Single-piece moves are among the easiest to fit in on short notice. If you need it today, read can I really book movers for today. For cost, see how much a small move costs in Chicago.
