How Long Can I Store My Piano?
How Long Can I Store My Piano?
Last updated: October 2026
As long as you want. There's no maximum.
A piano might stay a few days while closing dates line up. It might stay for months while a house gets renovated, or while a family figures out who's going to take Grandma's upright now that the house is being sold. Either way works. You don't need to know the end date when you start. Most people don't.
How it's billed
Like all our storage, piano storage is billed monthly, or daily for short-term storage. The minimum is one day.
That means you only pay for the time the piano is actually with us. Nothing more. A short gap between homes doesn't turn into a full month on your bill.
Short-term storage
Short stays between homes are common. A move-out on the 28th and a move-in on the 3rd. A closing that slipped by a week. A renovation that's running long. Daily billing makes those short gaps simple.

Long-term storage
Long stays happen too. A piano might wait out a year abroad, a downsizing, or a renovation that turns into a bigger project. That's what the storage conditions are for. Both temperature and humidity are managed year-round, so the piano isn't sitting through Chicago's dry winters and humid summers unprotected. Read can you store my piano between homes.
Why long storage still needs care
Time alone doesn't hurt a piano much. Bad conditions do. That's the whole point. Swings in temperature and humidity are what crack soundboards and wreck tuning. In managed storage, those swings are kept under control, and the piano is placed where nothing leans on it and nothing gets set on top of it.
Changing your plans
Plans change. They always do. The house sells faster. The renovation runs longer. You decide to sell the piano instead of keeping it. With no maximum and no fixed end date, you can adjust as you go. When you're ready, tell us your delivery date and we'll schedule it.
If you decide the piano isn't coming home at all, we can take it from storage to wherever it needs to go. Usable pianos can go to a local donation center. Read what happens to an old piano after you pick it up.
Visiting the piano
Our storage isn't open for visits. We pick the piano up, store it, and deliver it to you when you're ready. Read can I access the piano while it's in storage.
After a long stay
Plan to have your tuner come out once the piano is home and settled. A piano that has been sitting for a long time will almost always need a tuning before it sounds its best.
Storage terms are covered on our piano storage service page, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and tell us how long you need.
