Can You Store My Piano Between Homes?
Can You Store My Piano Between Homes?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Pianos go into our storage, the same as the rest of our storage service, where both temperature and humidity are managed.
That matters for a piano more than for almost anything else you own, because a piano is a wooden instrument held under enormous string tension, and wood never stops reacting to the air around it. Swings in temperature or humidity are what crack soundboards and wreck tuning. A garage or a cheap self-storage locker can do real damage in a single bad season.
Why the conditions matter
A piano's soundboard is the big, thin wooden panel that gives it its voice. It swells in humid air and shrinks in dry air. Chicago serves up both. Furnace-dry winters. Thick August humidity. Sometimes a big swing inside a single week.
In a living room, that's why pianos drift out of tune with the seasons. In a storage unit that bakes in July and freezes in January, it can crack the soundboard, loosen the tuning pins, and split glue joints. That kind of damage often costs more to fix than the piano is worth.
So pianos are stored where temperature and humidity are both managed, all year.
How storage between homes works
We pick it up. The piano is blanket-wrapped and moved from your old home the same careful way as any piano move.
We store it. At our storage, it's placed where nothing leans on it and nothing gets set on top of it.
We deliver it. When your new home is ready, we bring it to you.
That's one company handling the whole chain. The move out, the time in the middle, and the move in.
Common reasons for storage between homes
The closing dates don't line up. You've sold one home, and the next one isn't ready yet.
You're renovating. The room where the piano lives is getting torn up.
You're moving long distance. The piano arrives before you do. Read how long does cross-country piano delivery take.
You're downsizing. The piano needs a place to wait while you figure out what's next.

How long, and how it's billed
You can store a piano as long as you want. There's no maximum. Storage is billed monthly, or daily for short-term storage, and the minimum is one day. Read how long can I store my piano.
Grand or upright
Both can be stored. Grands are moved the way they always are, partly taken apart and on their side on a skid board. Read can you move a grand piano.
When it comes out
Plan to have your tuner come out once the piano is home and has had time to settle in.
Storing the rest of your home too?
If more than the piano needs to wait, our storage service covers furniture and boxes the same way. One pickup, storage for days or months, one delivery.
Piano storage is part of our piano storage service, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
