Can I Visit or Practice on My Piano in Storage?
Can I Visit or Practice on My Piano in Storage?
Last updated: October 2026
No. Our storage isn't open for visits. We pick the piano up, store it, and deliver it to you when you're ready.
We know that's not the answer every pianist wants to hear. If you're a serious player, a few weeks without your own instrument can feel like a long time. But our storage isn't a self-storage facility with a roll-up door and a key code. It works differently, and that difference is part of what keeps your piano safe.
How our storage works
We pick it up. The piano is blanket-wrapped and moved from your home.
We store it. It's placed where nothing leans on it and nothing gets set on top of it, in storage where both temperature and humidity are managed.
We deliver it. When you're ready, we bring it to your new home.
You don't drive to a storage unit, find a parking spot, or carry anything. We handle every step. That also means the piano isn't being uncovered, played, and re-covered by visitors while it's waiting.
Why practice there wouldn't work anyway
A stored piano is wrapped and protected for storage, not set up to play. A grand is partly taken apart for the trip. The legs and pedals come off with the music stand and lid, and it's stored the way it travels. Read can you move a grand piano. Unwrapping it, setting it up, and wrapping it again for every practice session would add risk, not reduce it.
What players do instead
Keep a digital keyboard handy. A portable keyboard or digital piano can bridge a few weeks or months. Those are much simpler to move, too. Read do you move digital pianos and keyboards.
Rent practice time. Many music schools and studios rent rooms with pianos by the hour.
Keep the storage short. If you can, plan the gap between homes to be as short as possible.
For students preparing for an audition or a recital, the best move is often to time the storage around the performance, so the piano goes into storage after the big day and comes home before the next round of serious practice begins. A little planning goes a long way.
Need it back quickly?
Tell us your delivery date and we'll schedule it. If your plans change, just let us know.
Getting something out of storage
The same rule applies to the rest of our storage. We pick your things up, keep them in our storage, and deliver them to your place. For how general storage works, read do you offer storage solutions.
How long it can stay
As long as you want. There's no maximum. Storage is billed monthly, or daily for short-term storage, and the minimum is one day. Read how long can I store my piano.
When it comes home
Plan to have your tuner come out once the piano is back and settled in.
Storage access is covered on our piano storage service page, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com when you're ready for it back.
