Can You Unload a Rental Truck From Out of State?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. You drove it here. We'll carry it in.
After a long drive into Chicago, the last thing anyone wants is to haul a couch up three flights of stairs. That's where we come in. Since everything arrives already packed and wrapped, our crew simply handles the unload. No packing materials needed.
What to tell us before you arrive
Unloading goes smoothly when we know what's coming. When you call, tell us these things.
The truck size. It helps us plan the crew.
When it's arriving. A window is fine. Long drives don't always land on the minute.
The destination. The address, the floor, and whether there are stairs or an elevator.
Anything heavy or awkward. A piano, a safe, a sectional that barely made it into the truck in the first place.
What's waiting at the Chicago end
Out-of-state drivers often find out about Chicago's quirks on arrival. A heads-up helps.
Parking. Many Chicago blocks need a temporary no-parking permit to hold curb space for a truck. If your new block needs one, sort it out before you arrive, or you could end up circling with a 26-foot truck.
Building rules. High-rises often want a certificate of insurance from the moving crew, and some set move-in windows. We send COIs for free, usually the same day the building sends its requirements.
Walk-ups. A lot of Chicago apartments sit up a few flights of stairs. On walk-up jobs we usually send three or more movers, and they carry with lift straps and shoulder dollies.
Winter. From December 1 to April 1, Chicago bans overnight parking from 3 to 7 a.m. on 107 miles of main streets, whether it's snowed or not. If you're arriving late and unloading in the morning, check where you park overnight.
Our post on moving into Chicago from another state covers more of what new arrivals should know.
Putting it back together
Beds, tables, and other pieces that came apart for the drive go back together at the new place. That's always included in the hourly rate.
How it's priced
Unloading is labor only, priced by crew size and hours and quoted upfront. Like every job, it has a 2-hour minimum, and moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. Read how labor-only moving help is priced.
A note on coverage
Our coverage applies to the part of the job we're doing, which here is the unload. The drive was yours, so anything that happened on the road isn't something our coverage reaches. Read are my belongings insured when someone else drives the truck.
Loading at the other end
Still planning the trip? If you're loading a truck in the Chicago area to move out, we handle that too. Read do you load rental trucks and PODS.
Unloading help is part of our loading and unloading service, one of our moving services.
