Are My Belongings Insured if Someone Else Drives the Truck?
Last updated: October 2026
Only the part we're working on is covered.
On a loading-only job, our crew loads your rental truck or container, and then someone else drives it. Our coverage applies while we're doing our part of the job. Once responsibility shifts to another party, like whoever drives the truck, our coverage no longer applies.
It's worth knowing that before moving day, so you can plan for the part of the trip we're not handling. A lot of people assume the movers' coverage follows the load all the way to the new address, and finding out otherwise after a long drive and a bad pothole is the worst possible time to learn it. Plan early.
Where our part starts and ends
On a loading-only job, our part is the loading. On an unloading-only job, our part is the unloading. If we're doing both, we're covering both ends, but not the drive in between, because we're not the ones driving.
On a full move, our crew handles the whole trip, so our coverage applies the whole way. That's one of the real differences between labor-only and a full-service move.
What our coverage looks like
Every move includes our standard coverage. It's based on the weight of each item, which works for everyday furniture and boxes. It doesn't reflect what a valuable or sentimental piece is really worth.
For anything worth more, you can buy full coverage insurance, either through us or through your own insurer. It's your choice. Our post on standard liability coverage explains the basics, and do I need extra moving insurance helps you decide.
Protecting the part we don't handle
Ask your rental company about coverage. Truck and container companies often offer their own coverage for the drive. Find out what it covers before you book.
Check your own insurance. Some homeowners and renters policies cover belongings in transit. Call your agent and ask.
Load it right. A tight, well-loaded truck is the best protection for the drive. Heavy pieces low, boxes stacked tight, nothing loose. Our crews load so nothing shifts, which is the part we can control.
Keep valuables with you. Documents, jewelry, and anything irreplaceable should ride with you, not in the truck. Read what to keep with you on moving day.
When a full move makes more sense
If the drive itself is what worries you, a full move might be the better fit. With us, the same truck and crew handle your move from pickup to delivery, and your belongings are never handed off to another company. For long-distance moves, see our long-distance moving service.
The rest of labor-only

This question lives on our loading and unloading service page, part of our moving services.
