Can You Move a Gun Safe, Floor Safe, or Jewelry Safe?
Can You Move a Gun Safe, Floor Safe, or Jewelry Safe?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. We move all kinds of safes.
Two rules apply to every one of them. The safe must be empty. And we don't move guns. Beyond that, each type has its own quirks, and knowing them ahead of time makes the move go faster.
Gun safes
Gun safes are often the biggest safes in a home. They tend to be tall, deep, and heavy, and they're often tucked into a basement or a garage.
Empty it first. The guns come out and travel separately with you, following the firearm transport laws where you live and where you're going.
Know the model. Gun safes vary a lot in weight. The make and model tell us what we're dealing with. We routinely handle safes up to 1,500 lbs. Tell us the model and we'll confirm. Read is there a weight limit for moving a safe.
Mind the height. A tall safe has to tip and turn on stairs and in doorways. Measure the path, especially in older Chicago homes with narrow staircases.
Floor safes
Floor safes are built differently from the standing kind. Tell us about yours in detail when you call, including how it's installed and what's around it. Photos help a lot, and we'll talk through the job with you before anything gets scheduled.
Jewelry safes
Jewelry safes are often smaller but surprisingly heavy for their size. They're also usually full of the most valuable things in the house.
Empty it and carry the contents yourself. Jewelry, watches, and heirlooms should ride with you, not on any truck.
Mind the finish. Jewelry safes often have nicer exteriors than gun safes, and they get padded for the trip like any other piece of furniture.
Not sure what kind you have?
That's fine. Plenty of people inherit a safe with a house, or bought one so long ago that the paperwork disappeared years before they ever thought about moving it, and the brand name on the door has worn off. Send us a few photos and the measurements. We'll take it from there.
What every safe move needs
An empty safe. No exceptions. Read does my safe need to be empty for why.
A clear path. Rugs and furniture moved, stairs clear.
A destination. The exact spot it's going, decided before the crew arrives.
Floors and door frames get protected at both ends. When a safe is too big for the stairs or the door, our hoisting and crane service is the option for large items that need to come in or out another way.
Where most safes go
Basement placements are the most requested safe move in Chicago homes. If yours is moving within the same house, read do you move safes within the same house. For a deeper look at heavy safes and stairs, see safe moving in Chicago.
Pricing
Safe moves are hourly like our other moves, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel.
All kinds of safes are covered by our safe moving service, one of our moving services.
