Does My Safe Need to Be Empty?
Does My Safe Need to Be Empty?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. The safe must be empty before we move it.
It's one of the few hard rules on a safe move, and it's there for good reasons. Here's why, and what to do with everything that was inside.
Why the safe has to be empty
Weight. Contents add weight to something that's already heavy. Every extra pound makes the stairs harder and the move slower.
Shifting. A safe gets tilted on the way down a staircase and onto a truck. Anything loose inside slides, hits the door, and can damage both the contents and the safe.
Your valuables. The things people keep in safes are usually the most important things they own. Think cash and jewelry. Passports and deeds. A will, or a family heirloom that can't be replaced. Those shouldn't ride on any moving truck. They should ride with you.
Guns. We move all kinds of safes, but we don't move guns. If it's a gun safe, the guns need to come out and travel separately.
What to do with the contents
Make a list. Before you empty it, write down what's inside. It takes ten minutes and gives you a checklist for when you put everything back.
Pack the contents separately. Documents in a folder or a small box. Jewelry in a pouch or a small case. Keep it organized so it's easy to put back.
Carry it yourself. Valuables should stay with you on moving day, in your car or your bag. Our post on what to keep with you on moving day has a good list.
Plan for the guns. Follow the laws where you live and where you're going for transporting firearms, and keep them with you or arrange their transport separately.
Why we can't make exceptions
When you're staring at a heavy safe and a pile of paperwork the night before the move, it's tempting to just lock the door and let the crew deal with whatever is inside it tomorrow. But a full safe is heavier, harder to control on the stairs, and riskier for everything inside. So the answer stays the same. Empty it first.
Timing it
Empty the safe a day or two before the move, not the morning of. That gives you time to find a safe place for the contents, and it means the crew can start right away when they arrive.
Other things to prepare
Know the model. The make and model help us confirm the weight. We routinely handle safes up to 1,500 lbs. Read is there a weight limit for moving a safe.
Clear the path. Rugs, furniture, and anything on the stairs out of the way.
Decide where it's going. The exact spot, before the crew arrives.
Coverage
Every move includes our standard coverage, which is based on weight. That applies to the safe itself, not its contents, since the contents should be with you. For more on coverage, read are you licensed and insured.
This rule is covered on our safe moving service page, part of our moving services.
