Do You Move Safes Within the Same House?
Do You Move Safes Within the Same House?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Repositioning a safe inside your home counts as a safe move, and we quote it the same careful way.
It might be a short distance, but it isn't a small job. A safe that goes from the main floor to the basement still has to travel down every one of those stairs. Moving it from the garage to a closet still means carrying hundreds of pounds through doorways and across finished floors. The distance is short. The weight isn't.
Why people move a safe inside the house
The reasons vary. A basement gets finished, and the safe finally gets a proper spot. A remodel turns the old office into a nursery. Someone decides the safe should be somewhere less obvious than the front hall closet. Whatever the reason, the safe has to go from where it is to where it should be.
Basement placements are the most requested safe move in Chicago homes, and plenty of those are safes that never leave the property, because the owner finally finished the basement or simply decided the main floor wasn't where a few hundred pounds of steel belonged. Sound familiar? You're not alone.
What we need to know
The safe. Make and model if you have them, or the size and rough weight.
The starting point. Which room and floor, and the path to the stairs or door.
The destination. Where it's going, and how tight the path is at that end.
The stairs. How many, how wide, and how sharp the turns are.
We routinely handle safes up to 1,500 lbs. Tell us the model and we'll confirm. Read is there a weight limit for moving a safe for more.
Protecting your home on a short move
A safe move inside your own house is exactly when you want your floors protected. Floors and door frames get covered along the whole path, the same as on any move. A heavy safe is the last thing you want rolling across new hardwood without protection.
Before we arrive
Empty the safe. It must be empty before we move it. Read does my safe need to be empty.
Clear the path. Rugs, furniture, and anything on the stairs should be out of the way.
Know where it's going. Decide on the exact spot before the crew arrives. Moving a safe twice is no fun for anyone.
Remove any guns. We move all kinds of safes, but we don't move guns.
How it's priced
An in-house safe move is hourly, like our other moves, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel, even when the move itself happens under one roof.
Moving to a new home instead?
If the safe is leaving with you, the same planning applies, plus the stairs and doorways at the new place. For a closer look at heavy safe moves, read safe moving in Chicago.
In-house safe moves are part of our safe moving service, one of our moving services.
