1. The one-year rule

If you haven't used, worn, or looked for an item in the last twelve months, it doesn't need to earn space on the truck. This test does more work than any other, because a year covers every season and every occasion, so anything that didn't come up in that window genuinely isn't part of your daily life. Apply it hardest to the places clutter hides:

• Kitchen gadgets and small appliances. The specialty gadget in the back of the cabinet, the third set of measuring cups, the appliance you bought during one phase.
• Closets. Clothes you kept for a version of your schedule that no longer exists, work clothes from an old job, event outfits from three years ago.
• The basement, attic, or storage closet. Where things go to be forgotten and then moved.
• Holiday decor. The bins that only get opened in December, and sometimes not even then.

2. Digitize the paper

Paper is heavy and unforgiving in a move: it soaks up water, weighs surprising amounts, and takes up a lot of box space for very little use. One weekend of scanning can eliminate a whole moving box. Prioritize:

• Documents you're keeping "just in case": old tax returns beyond the retention window, appliance manuals (almost all are online), warranty pamphlets for things you no longer own.
• Sentimental paper: kids' artwork, old greeting cards, school papers. Scanning keeps the memory without the physical footprint. Most families feel lighter after this one.

The permanent-record papers, birth certificates, deeds, current tax returns, still travel with you, of course, in a labeled folder you personally carry, not in a moving box.

3. The four-pile method

Room by room, sort into four clear piles. Making four decisions per item is faster than reopening the "what do I do with this?" question over and over.

Keep. Anything you use, wear, need, or genuinely enjoy having.
Sell. Items with real resale value, furniture, electronics, higher-end clothing. Facebook Marketplace and neighborhood buy-nothing groups are still where most of this goes in Chicago. List early; sales take longer than you think.
Donate. Gently used items with life left in them. Chicago has good donation options for furniture and household goods; the trick is having a plan for how they actually leave your home.

• Measure your bigger pieces: sofas, dressers, dining tables, bed frames.
• Measure the doorways and stairwells on the path in, not just the destination room. A piece that fits the room won't help if it can't reach the room.

If a piece doesn't fit the floor plan, it shouldn't fit the truck. Better to sell or donate it now than to pay to move it and discover the problem at unload.

5. Have a plan for the pile
