How Long Does It Take to Move a Pool Table?

How Long Does It Take to Move a Pool Table?

Last updated: October 2026

Plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours just to take the table apart.

That surprises people. A pool table isn't carried out the door in one piece. It comes apart first, the slate travels separately, and every piece has to be handled with care. So the clock starts well before anything gets loaded onto the truck.

Here's how the rest of the time adds up.

Taking it apart

We take the table apart for every move. The rails and pockets come off, then the slate comes off the frame. That teardown is where the 1.5 to 2 hours go. It's careful work, and rushing it is how tables get damaged.

Taking the table apart is included in our hourly rate. It isn't an extra charge on top of the move.

Carrying it out

Once the table is in pieces, each piece has to get out of the house. That part depends on your home. A table in a ground-floor game room with a wide back door is quick. A table in a basement with a narrow staircase that turns at the bottom takes longer, because every heavy piece has to come up those stairs one at a time.

Most pool tables live in basements. Read can you move a pool table to a basement for how the stairs work.

The drive

The drive is the simple part. Whether the table is going a few blocks across Logan Square or out to a new house in the suburbs, the time on the road is whatever the Kennedy and the side streets allow that day. Easy.

At your new place

At the other end, the pieces come in and go to the room where the table will live. Here's the part to plan for. Once a pool table is moved, it needs to be leveled, and often the felt needs re-stretching or replacing. Leveling and re-felting need a billiards specialist, so plan to book one after we deliver.

That means your table may not be ready to play the same day we drop it off. Getting the specialist booked ahead of time keeps the wait short. Read can you re-level the pool table and re-stretch the felt for more on why.

What makes it faster

A clear path. Boxes, bikes, and furniture out of the way on both ends.

Accurate details. Tell us the table size and where it sits, including the stairs.

A ready room. Clear the space where the table is going before we arrive.

The specialist on the calendar. Book them before moving day, not after.

Moving more than the table?

If the pool table is part of a full house move, the teardown just becomes one piece of the day. We also move other game tables, like shuffleboard, ping-pong, and poker tables. Read do you move other game tables besides pool tables.

Pricing

Pool table moves are hourly like our other moves, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. Because the teardown alone takes most of that minimum, the table size and the stairs matter most to the final time.

Timelines are covered on our pool table moving service page, one of our moving services.

Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and tell us where the table sits.

I had an excellent move out experience with Windy City movers. I had a two bedroom apartment that also had a piano, and I lived on the top third floor without an elevator.
