Can You Re-Level a Pool Table and Re-Stretch the Felt?
Last updated: October 2026
No. Re-leveling and re-felting need a billiards specialist. Plan to book one after we deliver.
We'd rather tell you that up front than have you find out on moving day. Moving a pool table and tuning a pool table are two different skills. We handle the first one. A billiards specialist handles the second.
What we do
We take the table apart for the move. The slate comes off the frame and travels separately, with every piece padded and handled with care. Plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours for that teardown. We carry everything out, load it, drive it to your new home, and bring every piece into the room where the table is going.
Taking the table apart is included in the hourly rate.
What the specialist does
Once a pool table has been moved, it needs to be leveled. Even a small tilt changes how the balls roll, and anyone who plays seriously will notice it right away. The felt often needs to be re-stretched or replaced too, because felt that has been taken off a table doesn't always go back on tight and smooth.
That's precise work, and it's what billiards specialists do every day. They have the tools and the experience to get the slate level and the cloth right, so the table plays the way it should.
How to time it
Book the specialist before you move. Don't wait until the table is sitting in pieces in your new basement. Get a date on the calendar early.
Pick a date after our delivery. The specialist needs the pieces in the room before they can start.
Clear the room. Both crews need space to work around the table.
Ask the specialist about felt. If your felt is worn, moving day is a good time to replace it, since the table is already apart.
Why it's worth doing right
A pool table is a big investment, and a table that plays badly isn't much fun. Paying for the move and skipping the specialist is a bit like buying a piano and never getting it tuned. Our piano moving service works the same way. We move it. The specialist makes it sound right.
The stairs come first
Before any of this, the table has to get to the right room. Most pool tables live in basements, and the stairs are the hardest part of the move. Read can you move a pool table to a basement and how long does it take to move a pool table.
Other game tables
Shuffleboard, ping-pong, and poker tables come along too. Read do you move other game tables besides pool tables.
Pricing
Pool table moves are hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. The billiards specialist bills separately.
Leveling and felt are covered on our pool table moving service page, part of our moving services.
