How Is a Grandfather Clock Move Priced?
How Is a Grandfather Clock Move Priced?
Last updated: October 2026
Like every move, by the hour. Disassembly and reassembly are always included, and our standard 2-hour minimum applies.
There's no special clock surcharge. A grandfather clock needs careful handling, but the pricing works the same way as the rest of our moves. You pay for the time the job takes, and the careful parts are part of that time.
What's included
Preparing the clock. We prepare it ourselves, so you don't need to do anything before we arrive. The pendulum comes off, the weights come out, and the chains or cables get secured. Read how do you prepare a grandfather clock for the move.
Wrapping and padding. The case gets wrapped, with extra care for the hood and glass. Moving blankets are free during every move.
The move itself. Carrying the clock out, loading it, driving it, and bringing it in.
Reassembly. Putting the pendulum and weights back in place at your new home.
Disassembly and reassembly are always included in the hourly rate. They're never an extra.
What affects the time
The stairs. A clock on the main floor is quicker than one at the top of a walk-up.
The distance. Across the neighborhood or across the metro.
What else is moving. A clock moving on its own is a short job. A clock moving with a full house becomes part of a bigger day.
The clock itself. Some clocks are more complicated to take apart and put back together than others.
The 2-hour minimum
Every job has a 2-hour minimum, and moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. A clock moving on its own may fit within that minimum. If you have other heavy or delicate pieces, it's worth moving them on the same job.
Moving it with other heirlooms
Clocks rarely travel alone. The clock, the piano, and the organ can all move together, with one crew handling all of it. Read what kinds of organs do you move.

Coverage
Every move includes our standard coverage, which is based on weight. A grandfather clock is light for what it's worth, so for a valuable heirloom, you can buy full coverage insurance through us or through your own insurer. Read are you licensed and insured.
How to get an estimate
Tell us about the clock, where it is, and where it's going. Mention the stairs at both ends. We give estimates in person, online, or by phone if you prefer. Read how much does a move in Chicago cost for how our general pricing works.
After the move
Setting a clock level and getting the beat right can be a job for a clock specialist, especially on a valuable antique. That's a separate service from the move.
Clock pricing is covered on our grandfather clock and organ moving service page, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
