What Kinds of Organs Do You Move?
Last updated: October 2026
All kinds of organs. That includes pipe organs from a church or chapel.
Organs are a piano's heavier, stranger cousin. They come in a huge range of shapes and sizes, and almost all of them weigh more than they look. What they have in common is a heavy, awkward cabinet and delicate parts that need protecting.
Home organs
Spinet organs. The compact ones that fit against a living room wall.
Console organs. Bigger cabinets, often with a full pedalboard.
Pump organs. The old reed organs that came out of parlors and churches a century ago. Many are antiques.
Electronic organs. Lighter than the older types, but still bulky and full of electronics.
Church and chapel organs
We move pipe organs from churches and chapels too. These are big jobs, and every one is different. When you call, tell us about the instrument, the building, and where it's going. Photos of the organ, the console, and the path out of the building help a lot.
Church moves often involve more than the organ. Pianos and other furniture may need to move too. Tell us the full list.
How an organ is protected
Keyboards, stops, and pedals get padding. The cabinet gets blankets and wrap. Then the whole instrument is carried by a crew that's used to moving this kind of weight through Chicago doorways and down Chicago staircases, the same way we move pianos.
Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected along the way.
Taking an organ apart
Some organs need to come apart to move. Pedalboards, benches, and other parts may come off. Any disassembly and reassembly is always included in the hourly rate.
Stairs and tight spaces
Organs are heavy, and the stairs set the plan. If an organ won't fit up or down a staircase, our hoisting crew can bring it in or out through a window or over a balcony. Read what if my piano won't fit up the staircase, since organs follow the same logic.
Moving with the rest of the house
The organ often rides along with the piano and the grandfather clock. One crew can handle all of it in the same move. Read how do you prepare a grandfather clock for the move and can you move a grand piano.
Antique organs
Pump organs and older console organs are often antiques, and the cabinet gets the same care as our antique furniture work. Read do you move single antique pieces.
Coverage
Every move includes our standard coverage, which is based on weight. For a valuable instrument, you can buy full coverage insurance separately.
Pricing
Organ moves are hourly like our other moves, with disassembly and reassembly always included and a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel.
Organs are part of our grandfather clock and organ moving service, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.
