Do I Need a Permit to Park a Moving Truck in Naperville?
Do I Need a Permit to Park a Moving Truck in Naperville?
Last updated: October 2026
Generally no city permit is needed on residential streets. HOA communities often require advance notice, and we'll remind you to check when you book.
That's good news compared to some places. Really good news. In parts of Chicago, many blocks need temporary no-parking signs to hold curb space for a truck. Naperville's residential streets are usually simpler. But "no city permit" doesn't mean "no rules," so it's worth knowing what to check. A few minutes of reading now can save a frustrating conversation with a neighbor, a property manager, or an HOA board member on the morning of the move.
HOA rules
Many Naperville neighborhoods have homeowners associations. HOAs often have their own rules for moving trucks.
Advance notice. Some HOAs want to know ahead of time when a moving truck is coming, and a few ask for the date, the expected hours, and the size of the truck so they can let neighbors know or reserve space near a shared entrance.
Truck placement. Some have rules about where a truck can park.
Hours. Some limit when moves can happen.
Common areas. Townhome and condo communities may have shared driveways or entrances.
Check your HOA documents, or call your management company. Do it early. Tell us what they require when you book.
Overnight parking
Daytime street parking is usually simple. Overnight is different. Naperville's city code bans parking any vehicle on city streets between 2 and 5 a.m. If the truck needs to stay overnight, read can a moving truck park on a Naperville street overnight.
Driveways
Many Naperville homes have driveways that a moving truck can use. That keeps the truck off the street entirely. Problem solved. Tell us how long your driveway is and whether anything hangs low over it.
Condos and apartments
If you're moving into or out of a Naperville condo or apartment building, check with the building. Some have loading areas, elevator reservations, or move hours. Some want a certificate of insurance. We send COIs for free, usually the same day your building sends its requirements. Read when will I receive the COI.
Moving from Chicago?
If your move starts in Chicago, the Chicago end may need parking signs. Read do I need a parking permit to move in Chicago.
Newer subdivisions
Some of Naperville's newer subdivisions have narrow streets, tight cul-de-sacs, or rules about large vehicles. If you're moving into a brand-new neighborhood, ask the builder or the HOA whether there's anything a moving truck needs to know before it pulls in.
PODS and containers
If you're using a moving container, check your HOA's rules about where it can sit and for how long. We load and unload all kinds of trucks, PODS, and storage units. Read do you load rental trucks and PODS.
Summer moves
Summer is peak season in Naperville, when HOA calendars get busy too. Read when is the best time to move in Naperville.
Pricing
Naperville moves are hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel.
