Can You Handle Older Park Ridge Homes With Narrow Stairs?
Last updated: October 2026
That's most of our Park Ridge work. Vintage homes get padded banisters, protected floors, and crews experienced with tight 1920s layouts.
Park Ridge has a lot of beautiful older homes. Many were built when furniture was smaller and staircases were narrower. They have charm and original details. Lots of both. They also have tight turns, low landings, and doorways that weren't built for today's sofas and king-size beds.
Padded banisters
The banister is often the first thing that gets scraped on a move through an older home, usually by the corner of a dresser or a headboard that swings a little too wide on the turn at the top of the stairs. Before anything goes up or down the stairs, the banister gets padded. Original woodwork is part of what makes these homes special, and it can't be replaced easily.
Protected floors
Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected on every move, at no charge. In older homes with original wood floors, that protection goes down before furniture moves. Read how we protect floors and homes.
Tight layouts
1920s layouts often mean narrow halls, small landings, and sharp turns at the top of the stairs. The crew plans each big piece's path before carrying it. If a piece won't make the turn, there are options.
Take it apart. Many pieces come apart. Assembly and disassembly are always included in our hourly rate.
Hoist it. If it won't come apart, our hoisting and crane service can bring it in through a window or over a balcony.
Know before the day. If a piece truly won't work, we tell you before move day, not after.

Basements and attics
Older homes often have steep basement and attic stairs, and those are where a lot of things get stored. Decades of things, sometimes. Tell us what's down there or up there, so the crew comes ready.
Pianos and antiques
Older homes often hold older furniture. Pianos, antiques, and heirlooms get extra care. Read can you move antiques down an 1890s staircase, since the same approach applies in Park Ridge.
