Do You Move Digital Pianos and Keyboards?

Do You Move Digital Pianos and Keyboards?

Last updated: October 2026

Yes. Digital uprights move with light disassembly, and stage keyboards travel in cases. They're far simpler than acoustic pianos, and they're quoted accordingly.

A digital piano looks like a piano, but it doesn't move like one. There's no heavy iron plate inside, no soundboard, and no strings under tension. That means less weight and a lot less risk. It doesn't mean no care, though. Digital pianos are full of electronics, and the keys and the finish can still be damaged if they're handled badly.

Digital uprights

A digital upright is the kind that looks like furniture, with a cabinet, a stand, and pedals built in. These move with light disassembly. The stand and the pedal unit often come apart from the keyboard section, which makes the whole thing easier to carry and safer on the stairs.

Assembly and disassembly are always included in our hourly rate, so taking it apart and putting it back together isn't an extra.

Stage keyboards

Stage keyboards and portable digital pianos travel in cases. If you have a case, use it. If you don't, tell us before moving day so the keyboard can be packed and padded properly. Stands, benches, and pedals travel separately.

Before we arrive

Unplug everything. Power, pedals, speakers, and any cables.

Bag the cables. Keep them together and label them so setup is easy.

Remove music and accessories. Anything sitting on top or stored in the bench.

Find the manual. If the stand needs to come apart, the manual helps.

Why it's simpler

An acoustic upright can weigh several hundred pounds and is top-heavy. A grand has to come apart and travel on its side on a skid board. A digital piano is lighter and more forgiving. Read can you move a grand piano for how much more goes into an acoustic move.

Digital pianos also don't need tuning after the move. Plug it in and play.

That alone makes them a lot easier to live with on moving day, since an acoustic piano owner usually has to wait for the instrument to settle and then book a tuner before it sounds right again, while a digital owner can be playing the same evening the boxes come off the truck.

Moving it with everything else

Most digital pianos move as part of a full home or apartment move. They go on the truck with the rest of your things. If it's the only thing moving, we can do that too. Read can you move just one piece of furniture.

Older or unusual digitals

Some older digital pianos and organ-style home instruments are bigger and heavier than today's models. Tell us the brand and model when you call. We'll plan for it.

Coverage

Every move includes our standard coverage, which is based on weight. That works against digital pianos, since they're light and can be expensive. For a valuable instrument, you can buy full coverage insurance separately. Read are you licensed and insured.

Pricing

Digital piano moves are hourly like our other moves, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. Because digitals are far simpler than acoustics, they're quoted accordingly.

Digital pianos are part of our piano moving service, under our piano moving hub and our moving services.

Call (773) 275-4100 or email info@wcmoving.com, and tell us what kind of keyboard you have.

I had an excellent move out experience with Windy City movers. I had a two bedroom apartment that also had a piano, and I lived on the top third floor without an elevator.
