Only with permission. Parking on village streets is prohibited from 2 to 6 a.m. You can request permission one night at a time by calling the police at (630) 286-5460 or online, before the 2 a.m. cutoff, up to 14 times a year. Permission isn't granted when there are two inches of snow or more.

For most moves, this rule never comes up. Not once. The truck arrives in the morning, the move is done by evening, and the truck is long gone by 2 a.m. But a multi-day move, or a long day that runs late, can leave a truck needing a place to stay overnight, and that's exactly the situation where knowing the rule ahead of time saves a stressful phone call at one in the morning.

How the permission works

One night at a time. Each request covers one night.

Before the cutoff. The request has to be made before 2 a.m.

By phone or online. Call the police at (630) 286-5460 or request online.

Up to 14 times a year. That's the yearly limit.

Not in snow. Permission isn't granted when there are two inches of snow or more.

When it comes up

Multi-day moves. The truck is loaded on day one and unloaded on day two.

Late finishes. A big move that runs into the night.

Your other options

Use the driveway. If the truck fits in your driveway, it doesn't need the street, and the whole question of permission and yearly limits simply goes away.

Plan the days differently. Sometimes the move can be split so the truck doesn't sit loaded at the curb overnight.

Winter

Other towns

Overnight rules vary a lot from town to town. Naperville bans parking on city streets from 2 to 5 a.m. Glenview bans overnight parking on all public streets from 2 to 6 a.m. between December 1 and March 31.
