Are There Architecturally Significant Homes in Elmhurst?
Last updated: October 2026
Yes. Elmhurst has homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe. Wherever you're moving in Elmhurst, protection goes down before furniture moves.
Elmhurst is better known for its tree-lined streets and its busy downtown than for famous architecture. But two of the most important architects of the twentieth century left their mark here, and both of their Elmhurst houses are worth knowing about if you're new to town or simply curious about the place you live.
Frank Lloyd Wright
The F.B. Henderson House dates from 1901, early in Frank Lloyd Wright's career. It's a private home, so it can only be viewed from the outside.
Mies van der Rohe
Mies van der Rohe designed the McCormick House in 1952. It's one of only three single-family homes Mies designed in the United States. In the 1990s, the house was moved to the Elmhurst Art Museum's campus in Wilder Park, where it's now the cornerstone of the museum's collection.
That's a house that was literally moved. An entire house. Not by us, but it's a fun piece of history for a moving company to share.
What it means for your move
Most Elmhurst homes aren't famous. But a lot of them are older, and older homes have the same kinds of details that make historic architecture special. Original woodwork. Wood floors that have been there for decades. Plaster walls. Narrow staircases.
Those are exactly the places where protection matters most. Floors, door frames, and stairs get protected on every move at no charge. Protection goes down before furniture moves. Read how do you protect brand-new floors and finishes and how we protect floors and homes.
Older staircases
Older staircases weren't built for modern sectionals and king-size beds. If a big piece won't make the turn, we take it apart, and assembly and disassembly are always included in our hourly rate. If it won't come apart, our hoisting and crane service can bring it in through a window or over a balcony.
Antiques and art
Homes with great architecture often have great furnishings too. For oversized, glass-faced, or high-value pieces, we build custom crates ourselves. Read our antique furniture moving guide and do you build custom crates for art, mirrors, and fragile items.
Old and new
Elmhurst has a lot of new construction too, including teardown rebuilds on older lots. Read can you move us out and back in around an Elmhurst teardown or rebuild.
Other historic suburbs
Elmhurst isn't the only western suburb with historic homes. In Hinsdale, the Robbins Park Historic District covers 368 buildings. Read is my Hinsdale home in a historic district.
Pricing
Elmhurst moves are hourly, with a 2-hour minimum. Moving companies in the Chicago area charge at least one hour for travel. Our pricing doesn't change with the season.
Elmhurst homes are covered on our Elmhurst movers page, alongside our moving services.
